That could isolate it down to interaction with the Intel GPU.

I have tried it on Linux/Intel/Wine and that was also fine.

I no longer have a Windows machine with Nvidia to try.

Ah your Intel GPU is the one in use for Links? My laptop has Nvidia+Intel but I use the Nvidia one for Links, I tried it anyway, course worked fine a full round.

My Windows 11 notebook only has Intel Iris Xe.

It is my Linux notebook that has Intel + Nvidia, but on Linux even just using Intel works fine.

I have only one data point so far, but I have managed a round at TPC Southwind without a hang on my Windows notebook.

I upgraded dgVoodoo to version 2.79-3.

I have tested later versions in the 2.8.x family with Links in the past and found that they did not render reflective water correctly, hence why I tried a later version in the 2.7 family. I need to test further to be conclusive but it looks promising.

It did hang again, so it is intermittent, perhaps it depends on the scene being rendered.

So at the moment I have Windows 11 + Intel + dgVoodoo hanging and Linux + Intel + Wine playing fine. It is affecting two courses to date, as I go through courses though I am not trying them on both systems. My goal is to see what the courses are like rather than test them on specific configurations.

There are certainly a lot of very well done courses.

FWIW I dropped an Nvidia GT1030 into my Windows desktop. With the wrapper this course now runs fine, without the wrapper the course also runs fine. Looks very much like an Intel driver issue on Windows but it only affects a few courses, so while a driver problem something is a bit out of the ordinary with those courses.

Des,

I don't think there is anything stable across the board with the APCD or Links game and it's compatibility. Who knows if what type of system a course is designed on could make a difference in how it plays. This is the Twilight Zone of games.

Glenn,

It has certainly been a challenge getting Links running on the systems I have, once I found what each system "needed" the software has been running pretty well, even through multiple reinstallation on some systems. Admittedly, the challenges on Linux were the hardest to overcome, but they turned out to be more the specific system I was working with, and it turned out it has many of the same problems under Windows 10 when I tried it. I am not thinking that I have any sort of a global problem, too few courses are affected for that to be the case I think.

I can now run Links on:
  • Windows 11 + Nvidia
  • Windows 11 + Intel + dgVoodoo
  • Linux + Wine + Nvidia
  • Linux + Wine + Intel
So have plenty of alternatives I can play a course on. Alas the Windows notebook is often the most convenient system to use for Links.

I do not think what I am seeing is a result of the system the course was designed on. I suspect it is more likely something in the APCD along with something in the way the course is created that trips my notebook, it also tripped my desktop before it had the Nvidia HBA. From what I have seen so far it is only affecting a small number of courses, so I think the same "thing" has been done on those courses that trips the hang. I have no idea of the APCD to know what that may be, although so far it has only been 2003T courses have shown the problem.

Des,

Have you tried running my latest?

https://linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=2842

I am curious as it seems that the courses you seem to be having problems with are either mine or ones I worked with Sage on that were done on my newest laptop. I would be curious to see to see if Oak Hill could be causing you any problems.

I picked up early on in your posts and noticed that the issues you were having were only on courses I worked on and related it to my laptop. Did you run across problems on any of the other designers' courses?

Glenn,

I have played Oak Hill on the system, I just played it again and am seeing no problems.

I have played more courses on my Linux notebook than I thought I had, so am revisiting a lot, starting with the most recent courses. As I said somewhere, my original interest was to identify courses that are good to play, most have been, but the machine was not of particular interest then.

The list I posted are the only ones I have seen so far with this issue.

If I could find an earlier version or an Alpha of the course I have tried that, so the 2008 version of Deere Park worked for me as did the alpha of PGA National.

As far as other courses are concerned, The Golf club at Black Rock I am seeing a sound script crash, I have not looked further into that yet.

Atlanta Athletic Club - Highlands Course I see a problem in a back bunker on 17th where Links says I am under the ground level, Links does not like that.

So it not a great number of courses to date that are giving me grief, my interest is in real courses, so I tend to not look at fictional courses.

I noted Sage's name on some courses so amended my priority list of courses to look at.

The courses identified caught my eye because it is the same crash/hang each time.
