Royal Sydney Golf Club

Post by Colin Jones »

Royal Sydney will be released in the next 1-2 weeks. Pleased to make a contribution to the small number of Australian golf courses made for the APCD. Further, Royal Sydney is a unique Australian course in the Links library, as it is neither regional nor situated in the Melbourne sandbelt.

This exclusive Members-only no-guests club sits close to Sydney Harbour in the affluent eastern suburbs (where new money meets old). Being only 5kms east of Circular Quay (Bridge/Opera House/CBD) and less than 1km west of Bondi Beach, it sits in the middle of some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Do not expect to see any koalas, kangaroos, wallabies or wombats wandering around here!

It has been a venue for the Australian Open, most recently in 2016. Previous AO winners at Royal Sydney include McIlroy, Speith, Allenby, Calcavecchia, Tim Clark and the great Gary Player.

The APCD course is built from a Linkster 3M DEM, so it is highly accurate. I now know that the Club's strict "no-photos" rule gets obeyed, somewhat annoyingly. Even as a longtime former Sydney resident and still regular visitor there myself, its just not possible to visit this course. But, within these limitations, I feel I have developed a course that is as accurate as could be expected.

All plants (aside from a handful of old pines and the grasses) are all of the highest-quality and all are completely new to the APCD world. They give the course a clean and crisp feel.

Thanks Linkster. Thanks Hewi.

Note: The course is currently undergoing a controversial $17M renovation (i.e. hundreds of trees are being chopped/chipped and replaced with indigenous plants). It will result in the hole layout being re-routed and some holes being changed. So an update to the APCD version will be needed in the future.

Here are some screenshots (temporary pano only).

This looks awesome! The details you put into this course are spectacular!

Can't wait to play a round here. From looking at the DEM the greens have some character. This old course has lots to offer, even if it isn't over 7000 yards.

I had a look at my QGIS work and the DEM I provided was 2m.

Thanks mate. Indeed, 2M it is Linkster! Dont know why I got to thinking otherwise.

Thats right, the RS green complexes are known for their mix of deep swales and rising mounds, The greens themselves take on some of these features too,but are mostly quite moderate.

Here's some typical examples of the green complexes at RS.
