Muirfield

Post by Adelade »

Friday last week marked the 4th anniversary of the Beta release for the course Muirfield (Scotland) by Steve Chahla - an absolutely fantastic APCD rendering (especially considering it being his first course) of a really famous major venue course which is otherwise unavailable for Links (not to be confused with Muirfield Village in Ohio, USA). You can see some screenshots and read more about it from this original thread where the project was first revealed: viewtopic.php?p=4207#p4207 ). Ever since then I have been so looking forward to the final, or at least a playable version with the texture property problem from the Beta fixed. Steve Chahla (aka MrMoggie) and Sean Landry (aka 72Animal) have on and off in the past few years been arranging for the clubhouse to be built, and the last time we heard from them (this thread: viewtopic.php?p=17381#p17381) it sounded like it was all done. No one seems to have heard from them since then, I emailed Sean Landry last year without having received any reply, and Wheeler said he had sent private messages to them both without receiving any reply (neither of them have logged in since July/September 2023).

While I do hope and believe that they will eventually return and release the course one day (they have both been gone and returned now and then in the past), Im finding it very difficult to keep on waiting patiently for this course, especially when I've already been trying to wait patiently for so long, and gotten my hopes up several times, and especially because the 4-year-old beta has been sitting there all this time, already so good and close to finished except for that minor technical problem (and the missing clubhouse, for those who care a lot about that).

So, a few months ago I told myself I would wait for this 4 year anniversary of the beta, and then see what people think about me taking it into my own hands and, not finish the course as a final, but release a 2nd beta version (under Steve Chahla's name) with the technical problem fixed and the clubhouse still missing. I dont do this lightly, I always really wanted to wait for Steve Chahla to finish the course himself, and I detest touching someone else's course without their permission, even for something as small as fixing a technical problem, but I have no way of asking for his permission, we dont know when, if ever, he will return, and the course looks so wonderful and tempting, sitting there without us knowing if it will be finalized in 6 months, yet another 4 years, or ever at all. If I had known from the start that it would take over 4 years since the beta, I would have made this post long before now.

If anyone has any thoughts or objections about my plan of updating the beta, please speak now

Oh and, I know the beta is also missing pano and hole previews, and only has 2 pins per hole, If I make an updated beta, I might do some simple hole previews and add some pins, not sure about pano. A simplistic 2D clubhouse might be possible but I wasnt necessarily planning on it.

Hi Adelade,

this is a good beta and the course is beautiful.
Yes please do something with it.

It would be a shame if all this work were lost.
I wouldn't have any problems if there were two versions of Murifield. :fcrossed:
