Gentlemen,
I have a Lenovo, Legion 5 17IMH05H laptop which is my work horse. Over the years the Shift and the Ctrl keys have gradually become more and more inconsistent to the point that it is now a severe problem.
The keys feel the same as all the other keys when operated, it's just that the functionality only works intermittently.
I have read on the internet that it is possible to change the keys, but as a person that is all fingers and thumbs, I am a little(?) hesitant.
Has anybody had a similar experience and if so what was your solution?
Has anybody got any advice as to the best way to solve the problem?
Thank you,
Ian
Laptop keys only work intermittently
Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
Ian.
It sounds like it could well be the contacts underneath the keys.
Notebook keyboards are generally non-repairable items. In some cases they are discrete units, but in many cases these days they are riveted to the top cover, plastic rivets of course. It looks like with Lenovo the keyboard and top cover come as a unit.
Taking a notebook apart is not for the faint of heart, to change the top cover the machine has to be dismantled, assuming you can get the part.
I have an old notebook that has a dodgy keyboard, the only solution I have for that machine is an external keyboard.
Edit: This looks like it is that hardware maintenance guide for your machine

Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
Thanks Des,
After further search it looks like for this model it would need a new keyboard. After looking through the manual you sent I believe that my fingers and thumbs are not compatible with such work.
The laptop doesn't move any more so I will look at the external keyboard.
Thanks again.

Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
The way notebook manufacturing works I think you would struggle to get such a part.
Generic parts like disks, memory, WiFi cards are easy enough to source but model specific parts for older machines are a different story.

Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
Des,
It is looking like I will be buying a replacement laptop/notebook.
In place of the 17 inch, heavy laptop I have, I am now looking for a lighter, smaller laptop as I play most of my Links on my Allinone, although I do want the ability to play Links on the new laptop.
The laptop I am considering is the Acer Aspire Go 15 AG15-42P-R848. (I have only ever had HP or Lenovo laptops so I do not know about Acer.)
Is it beneficial to have 32GB Ram instead of 16GB? (extra cost -150 Euro (240Australian Dollars)).
You will have gathered by now that I am asking you for advice.
If you have the time I would appreciate it, or if there is another laptop that you would recommend, please let me know.
Thank you.
Ian

Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
Ian,
17" notebooks tend to be heavy bricks. More transportables rather than notebooks, so I can well understand wanting something a little smaller, personally I would now not go lower than 15.6", I have used more compact machines, often with external screens, but find this size a good compromise.
My old Notebook is an Acer, A gen 7 i5 that now runs Linux, it is a 15.6" system. My currently Desktop is an Acer unit too, a Gen 13 i5.
That notebook is now 9 years old, really well-used, almost every day still, and it still runs well, so Acer has been good from my perspective, my recent thoughts have been along the lines that I would look at Acer the next time I want/need a system so would have no problems recommending someone looks at Acer. My current notebook is an Asus Gen 11 i5. I tend to buy what is on the market at the time for a reasonable price, so I tend to be somewhat brand agnostic, the market is always changing.
I am familiar with HP as I worked for them and therefore used their notebooks, they do not manufacture their own notebooks, they buy them from various OEMs, their business grade notebooks tend to be good, expensive though, I have also worked for Compaq and Digital Equipment Corporation. FWIW Acer spun off their manufacturing business into a separate company so they could sell across the market, they still build many of the Acer systems of course.
The major brands all tend to be fairly decent systems, to be honest there are a relatively small number of notebook manufacturers, there is a lot of badge engineering.
I have not owned an AMD based system for many years so cannot really offer an opinion there, I simply am not familiar with them, for the last 15 years or so all my systems have been Intel Core i series systems
If someone is buying an Intel based system, I would suggest a system with both the Intel GPU and an Nvidia GPU, if they can stretch that far, it gives greater flexibility (think Links). With an Intel only system you must use a wrapper. DDrawCompat is very good, superior to dgVoodoo IMO, but the flexibility if you have both GPUs type (as my old Acer has) gives you choice. My Asus just has an Intel GPU, my desktop has both so I have and do use Links under both Intel and NVidia GPUs. I would not buy a system with an i3 CPU any more, they tend to run out of puff.
My Windows systems all have 16GB of memory. 8GB I do not think is enough anymore, my desktop came with 8GB, I looked at the memory usage and it was too tight, I added the extra 8GB. To go to 32GB really depends on your usage and what sort of software you use. On my system I use web, mail, Office applications like Writer, Calc (I use LbreOffice) etc I also use Paint.Net and GIMP. Links is not relevant as a 32 bit application the ceiling for it is 4GB
Probably not the answers you are looking for, hope they help in any case.

Des,
Thank you for your time, effort and expertise in giving that concise report. It has helped.
I will let you know what I decide - when I make my mind up.
(Sometimes less choice is better.)

Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
Ian,
Good luck with your deliberations.
I have been lucky so far, when I was looking each time the choice came down to one at the end of the day, machines sort of eliminated themselves, so the choice became easy and it just became a matter of price haggling.
The only thing that subsequently happened was deciding to see if Links would work on the new systems so I could retire an old Mini tower running XP.
As you have probably seen I have exceeded my expectations of what I could get Links working on, but if I was doing it now I would look to see if I could get a notebook with two GPUs the embedded one in the i5 and an Nvidia.
I think the Acer you are looking at has a Ryzen processor, it is not a model available here in Australia, if so it should not have the problems of Intel GPUs.
It was because of Links that I added an Nvidia GT1030 to my desktop, it has been a good addition.
I'll be interested to see what you end up with and how it goes.

Des,
I have just ordered the Acer as it seemed the best option at the price. I have AMD on my Allinone and i have had no problems with Links.
I will let you know how it goes.

Re: Laptop keys only work intermittently
Des,
It took me a day to transfer all(?) the files to the new laptop with only a few minor hiccups.
The hardest part is the initial set-up when I have to use the touch pad as I only ever use mouse with the laptop. I did have a problem when I selected the wrong keyboard which I noticed when my internet access password wouldn't get accepted.
Links went OK, I loaded the last files I purchased from Links Country Club. After loading, it went a little crazy, but after shutting it down and opening it via "C:\Program Files (x86)\Links 2003\LinksMMIII.exe" it worked well. I only had the screen size to alter in display settings.
The screen on the laptop is very sharp.
A minor problem with my very old Microsoft Money file (30+ years old), as it wouldn't open, but after a search on the web I managed to find a solution.
I always thought that my club distances were the Links default, but they were not. How do I get to alter the distances?
Thanks for all your help.
