A new course (very slow progress due to win 11)

Hi Sage,

Windows 11 is a bit of a resource hog. Your 16GB memory and the SSD should be fine though, I would think.

However I reckon that the Celeron is going to struggle even with something as old as Links. CPU more suited to email, office type stuff, and web browsing type tasks.

Is that actually a 1.1 GHz CPU for a Win 11 computer? To be fair, this might say more about my lack of familiarity with non-gaming PCs than about the CPU, but still, that sounds very low... But hey, I feel like running Win 11 should be much more difficult than running APCD/Links so can it really explain Sage's particular APCD planting issue...? Who knows, but possibly the issue is that the CPU can just barely run Win 11 and struggle to handle anything else on top of it.

I looked at the APCD back in the middle ages and had trouble making heads or tails of it, so anything to do with that program is something of an unknown to me. I would have liked to have been able to create even an entry level rendition of the courses I have played, but it didn't even appear to be friendly enough to do that. The PDA software I had to create GPS maps of courses to use while playing was heaps easier.

The Celeron is not a gaming CPU, certainly not a CPU for doing any sort of design work, it is a browse the net, do some email type of beast so I think would struggle, even with something of Links' age especially running an OS like Windows 11. In the day you would be using a Pentium, so a Celeron now would probably be OK if it was running something like XP. Speed itself is not the real determinant, you see a wide range of speeds for CPUs and faster does not mean too much necessarily, My old i3 runs faster than my newer i5's, i.e. has a higher clock speed, but the i5's leave it for dead with graphics despite the i3 running Linux and the i5 running Windows 11.

As to Sage's planting problems I just do not have the knowledge to say how much of a problem the system would be in terms of being able to do it, rather than performance.

I know with Windows 11 and embedded Intel GPUs Links itself runs quite well when using the wrapper, in my opinion a little better using a slightly older version. I doubt it would work without it.

I do not know if the APCD also requires use of the wrapper, that could be something to explore. The APCD itself is where there is a hole in my knowledge.

I was always led to believe that Celeron was the poor relation in the processor family.

Certainly it is an entry lever processor, pretty basic, so I would not have high expectations.

If Sage is taking the same course file to different computers that have the exact same APCD config and having problems it sort of points to the machine.

Normally I would think of Software config problems, as being the main cause of such issues, but again I do not know APCD specifically.

Performance problems can be explained by different CPU etc and that is what I really would expect to see rather than not being able to do something, so certainly I would look the APCD's setup as being the primary cause of something just not working properly rather than being very slow. I see the difference in performance just running Links itself between my 3rd Gen i3 and 13th Gen i5, but it is not that I cannot run Links or something does not work.

Another developer may be able to cast an eye over your APCD config and see if anything stands out.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. But then again, Forest Planting (making a lot of 2D objects such as trees/bushes appear at once within specified area) is probably the most resource-demanding task that APCD deals with.
