just noticed that i have 23H2 update. The 24h2 update will be rolled in now, formerly it wasn't automatically installed. It will be with the next bundle of updates, I think, I paused update until 12/25/24.

Hi, a very simple question...I have a beautiful version of Links 2003 which works very well on Windows 11, no bugs, skies OK, etc etc..

why not upload it on a server so that interested people can download it then copy and paste it onto a blank version from their own home pc?

This should work, right?

Nico

Nico,

Unfortunately it isn't that simple. The installation sends files to multiple locations, and more importantly, adds registry settings. The other variable is that your installation is running beautifully on YOUR system. That means that your hardware configuration and the corresponding drivers are playing nicely with Links. Even if you could copy and paste the file structure and export and import the registry settings (which is technically possible) the next persons system would have to be almost identical to yours for them to see the same results.

I think you had a great idea, and it would've worked back in simpler times (DOS days for example), but there's almost no chance of that going smoothly in today's OS madness.

Great to hear that some are having no problems with the update, seems it works better if you wait for the update instead of installing it yourself like I did. I feel more confident now for when I have to update.

Installed 24H2 this a.m. Didn't have enough disk space, so spent some time removing several programs that used 1+ Gigabytes. Then tried to open Links, which appeared to freeze my desktop (saw tiny blue spinning circle). I didn't know this indicated something active was preventing me from selecting any of my desktop program icons. Fortunately selecting the task bar worked, and it showed an icon with a flashing orange shield. Clicking it produced a message that gave directions for finalizing the Gigabyte removal procedure. After that, I was able to open other apps from their desktop icon, but the Links icon was inop. Uninstalled Links and I will reinstall it later today. Hopefully that works.

Reinstalled Links and everything seemed to go O.K, but when I clicked on the Links Icon to play the game I got this message:

"Links 2003 cannot varify your disk. Please refer to the README for further information."
However, I could not find anything addressing this issue there. I checked the Tech Forum with 0 results. Is there anything posted else where on this problem?

Thanks in advance, Dave

There is one possibility I can think of. Is your copy of Links on disk? Maybe switching your RuKsHuK.exe file would help.

1. Go into your /Links 2003/ folder, find your RuKsHuk.exe file, and add the word "old" to the file name.

2. Download this copy of the RuKsHuK.exe file. You will need to unzip the file to get the .exe file that's inside.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/cderjb86 ... 91eln&dl=0

3. Put the new RuKsHuK.exe file into the /Links 2003/ directory.

Try to run Links. If this change didn't help, take that new RuKsHuK.exe file out, take out the "old" that you typed in the filename in step 1, and everything is back to where it was - no harm done. It's worth a try. In the early days of Links, the software came on disks. After loading it, the program would check your first disk before it would run. Good luck!
