LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' April 2002
There are purple flowers, purple brush, purple water, purple water? And you guessed it purple back tee markers. Its there in all its majesty, (not purple this time), Whistlers Mountain. He had separate well-done tee boxes, a lightly mowed fairway, attractive rough and a smoothly textured green but he didn't have a first cut or fringe at the greens. The creek ran throughout the course and served both as decoration but more as a hazard. The fairway bunkers seemed to be well placed and the greens bunkers were more of a hazard than you can imagine with the usually small greens. Lets get to that, the fairways when we had them were big enough to hit and the greens became smaller and more sloped as the course went on. But I'm getting ahead of myself. He also used tree placement as a hazard but hazards can be overcome some of these trees were just in the way and not very reasonably placed. His normal stands of trees had very attractive undergrowth and the entire course, if you like fantasy, was well constructed. He is, and it showed, very adept with the APCD.
The elevation and the caddie were excellent but I have the distinct feeling you aren't going to going far enough into the course to care. On hole # 5 the pin was placed less than 7ft from the fairway and on hole # 6 it was less than 10ft from the edge of the fairway, well you get the idea. Don't forget there wasn't any fringe. The course went quite well for 8 holes even though holes # 7 and 8 were ridiculous target holes. The course was fun to play up until then and the greens had very gentle breaks that were quite enjoyable, in fact up until that point I was thinking that in spite of the colors this was a nice course and it would get a good score. Then the green on hole # 9 totally changed my mind, the pin was placed on the side of a bowl like indentation, almost unplayable. Progressing to target golf on holes # 12 and # 13, # 14 normal, # 15 sort of target and normal. The # 16 hole was a target hole 286y with a 10ft drop and you could reach the green with your drive. The # 17 hole, target, and hole #18 was the end. I'm going to describe two holes because I believe I owe you as much information as possible about all courses.
Hole # 4, par 5, 554y, a bit of a risk reward hole. Driving off the tee you have your choice of a 3w or go for the gold and use your driver to pass the strip of rough across the fairway at 262y-273y, I went 280y down the right side of the fairway and passed the rough patch. With 263y left to the pin located on a green that was wide and narrow and between two branches of the stream I went for the fat part of the green. If you're a fair to good putter an eagle is possible.
Hole # 7, par 4, 360y, can you say ridiculous target golf? The first fairway my 6 iron put me behind a single tree and I had to use a flop 5 iron to get to the green. A green that was small, elevated and guarded by a bunker that circles it from 1 o'clock to 11 o'clock leaving me a notch opening in the rear.
What a shame that someone with the talent in apcd work had to make a course that is not very playable or enjoyable. His idea of a purple course didn't make it a fantasy course just because it was purple, it would have been a normal unplayable course without the color scheme. He showed some imagination in the hole shapes but if his next course is a fictional one instead of a fantasy he should most definitely have it beta tested so that his talents won't be wasted. I've already spent enough time on this course both playing and writing. Don't download it is my advice; the rest is up to you.
