LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Nilkas Oscarsson
Expectations:
Island Links was the first of three courses submitted from Drew Hawks and Todd Peloquin within a month. Its small size and current silver start rating tells me I shouldn't expect a masterpiece. The course name leads me to think that this is a tropical island course.
First impression:
Wow, this course actually has a splash screen! And a nice one too. A photo of a white sand beach with crystal clear blue water. Mmmmm, vacation...
First hole: this is a par 4 along the shore line. I see some trees on the left that appear to be hovering above the ground. This course has obviously not been validated lately. Not a promising start.
What's next?
The course then continues to wind its way over the small island. The golf course seem to take up most of the surface on the island. Each hole displays an impressive array of APCD faults. You name it, it's here: sharp edges, chaotic mesh, repetitive planting, unnatural slopes, unmapped or incorrectly mapped surfaces, ridiculous elevations and slopes, unplayable holes, ...
What's bad?
Just about everything really. This course is simply put not ready to be released. It has the state you get right after you've inserted your shapes. If you've tried that on a rolling terrain, you know what I mean. Then add some random extrusions and throw in some planting from completely different planting sets and you've got Island Links. This is when the real work starts guys. It takes hundreds of hours to make a good course.
What's good?
I often find it interesting to look at layouts from first time designers, since their minds are not ruined by preconceived ideas. Some of the holes at Island Links are quite clever and original in its design. Or how about island fairways, bunkers on the green surface and an island green surrounded by beach sand? Sometimes the ideas are a bit radical and the playability suffers. There were also holes that I found visually pleasing (5 and 10 for example).
The bottom line:
The designers show that they have talent to create interesting and beautiful holes, but they also display that laziness is their foremost quality. This course is an unfinished experiment and should never have been released.
I can't recommend it for a download unless you are utterly bored with perfect courses.
Drew and Todd: don't give up, go back to the drawing board and get some beta testers next time.
