LINKS CORNER REVIEW |

Course Overview
This is a re-released version of Xilver Plaine. The properties of a few of the plants used in the original course caused problems for players who were unfortunate to find themselves behind them. The pass through properties as they were caused the ball to react as if it had hit a wall or rock. This has been fixed in this new version.
This is a unique course with some very special characteristics and if I wasn't aware of who the the designer was I could still tell you who made the course. That's a funny thing about APCD courses. Even as the designer improves with time he can't quite change his style completely.
At any rate what makes this course stand out from the crowd? A few things actually. The looks, the playability, the overall value that should make it endure, and it's uniqueness. These things are all essential to a good course. This course has been meticulously crafted from the planting, to the objects chosen, the textures, the panorama, the numerous rock walls, the cart paths, the fences, etc. It's just a complete package and it's extremely well done.
Tips for Playing the Course
The fairways may be too tight for some PS'ers but the good Clicker will find them to be a good challenge.
The only other thing that I think somebody might say would be that the greens have too much break. I believe to score well on a course you should have to learn where to put your tee shot and where to put your approach to get a straight putt. If you play with fast firm greens be prepared for some possible three putts.
The course will play much tougher as you ratchet up the difficulty levels. Playing without wind and moderate greens and pins you should be able to avoid the hazards and score well. Crank up the wind and make the greens and pin positions difficult though and you may have a tiger by the tail.
Favorite Hole
I'm showing the par 4 10th hole for my screen shot but like most really good courses you can choose for yourself which hole is your favorite.
Overall
I love the entire look of this course from the textures to the planting to the panorama; just everything about it. The thing that really stands out to me the most is the pastel look which is further enhanced by everything being rounded and smoothed. It's very much like playing golf inside of a water color painting. I also love the subtle changes in elevation particularly the undulations in the fairways. Good, solid layout that doesn't drift over into the fantasy world. Excellent, excellent work all the way around. If you miss this one then I don't know what you're looking for in a golf course. Nice job Rick.
This review will be based on playability, aesthetics and originality. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion following my play-testing of the completed course.
I fully understand the hard work and immense skill that is involved in the designing of these courses and my comments will try to be constructive and without bias. |
