LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart

First Impression: This is the first course designed by Eric Lintemuth that I am aware of. I had heard several good things about this course before I even downloaded it. And The first impression of the others was spot on. The course is a fictional parkland course probably set somewhere in the Mississippi Delta. It could be placed anywhere fron NW Florida to Louisanna. It plays a rather short 6759 yards from the Big Boy tees but is quite challenging. The trees are of swamp nature and the textures fit very well for the course's basic theme. That theme being somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. The layout is done in a very professional manner and has a very unique look. Most of the fairways are slightly offset from the teeboxes giving you a different view than the typical course . The majority of the holes have water and bunkers strategically placed to increase the difficulty level for the player that swings for the fences.

The round starts off with a plane flying over the first tee...the sounds causing you to think twice before you swing. The majority of the course plays with that Risk v/s Reward factor. If you go for the big shot and are successful...you are rewarded. If you don't succeed, your are punished. The best example of this is on Hole #2. Eric even threw in a double fairway on hole #3 giving you two paths towards the green. The longer way gives you a more clear shot at the pin while the shorter of the two forces you to short a short iron over tall trees. Needless to say I chose the longer of the two. There were nice additions throughout the course and it was a pleasure to play this one. Hole # 9 offered a very picturesque short par 4 that was surrounded by water, rocks and even finished off with railroad ties to highlight the lake banks. I had never seen a double island par 4 before, but now I have thanks to Eric. The layout and each hole was laid out very well and no visible pulled verts, texture smears, or unscaled objects were present during this round. And very good job on this design and I enjoyed the golf experienced it gave me. I swear I even heard "Bigfoot" scream and cry out on Hole #11. If it wasn't Bigfoot, then I don't want to know what it was.

Custom amenities: Well used texture selection. 150 yard markers on every hole, custom objects such as the plane and the lillypads. Custom sounds included the plane and Bigfoot.

Greens: Were of varied shapes and well crafted. Loaded with gradual undulations and no flaws noted.

Fairways: Very impressive work here. Very original shapes used especially the rounded doglegs used on many par 4s. It gave for a different view off the tees.

Tee Boxes: Well crafted and usually flat (The way they are supposed to be). Even had a very nice rocky texture to give you that professional tee box look. I am not normally a fan of this, but this was well done and should be an example on how it should be done.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: Bunkers were nicely shaped but could use a little more work. It is a tough thing to perfect and I have not seen anybody create the perfect bunker. I just tend to believe that it is better to strive to do better every time. Water hazards were nicely done with lips to add to the realism. They also contained various plants and grasses...also the lillypads were a great addition.

Planting: Planting was overall very well done. I would have preferred to see more of a variety, but I cant fault the designer. The APCD does not have a vast variety of swamp like plants and that should not be frowned upon because he did with what was available. Hopefully the addon due soon will add to this deficiency.

Best Hole: Alot of the holes were great but I have to give it to two holes. Hole #6 459 yard par 4 was a great hole and it was my favorite due to the realism and playability factor. But the one that stuck out was Hole #9...the aforementioned double island par 4. This IMHO was the only rigged up hole and I normally don't prefer them. But it was so original and well crafted with the rock formations and railroad ties lining each texture...it could and should not go un-noticed.

Overall: A very good designed fictional course with loads of amenities. The custom sounds and objects just add to its appeal factor. A very good challenge to both swing types and just well done all around. I definitely think it is a MUST download. Excellent work Eric and I look forward to your next project.

Description
Fictional, marshland course.

Concept  2/10
I believe from the name that this course is supposed to be set somewhere in the Southern States. The appearance has great difficulty convincing me of this, due to the wishy-washy themes of many holes, and the variety of unconvincing planting, which see us shift from a sparse forest on one hole to somebody's back garden on the next. The designer has spent too much time creating canny golf holes, and not enough making the course anything like realistic.
Appearance  4/10
There's not a lot to shout about here. A lot of the time, the course looks credible, but on closer inspection, is very clearly artificial. Repetition is an enemy here, as are some poor extrusive work and unrealistic elevations (particularly on and around the greens). Some of the planting is terribly, terribly misjudged and I don't care for the gimmicks such as the rock-lined tee boxes, either.
Playability  7/10
A round at Boondock way passes satisfactorily swiftly, thanks to the variety of challenges served up by the designer. Even if re-creating real life isn't his forte, he certainly knows how to present an exciting round of golf. Several holes (most notably the ninth, which is ridiculously out of place - it should be on Barkcamp Lake) give the user a certain frisson of excitement, and nearly every hole has two distinct lines of play, which is exceedingly gimmicky, but certainly satisfying.
Challenge  4/10
Most Links players won't find this a satisfactory challenge. The difficulty level on the earlier holes is ramped up with some impossible green elevations, but later holes present a plethora of eagle attempts (I had one 5-foot putt, thankfully sunk, for an eagle). Bunkers are well placed, but easily escapable, the fairways are wide, and the rough unpunishing. This is a fairly easy ride, all told.
Technical  3/10
Several problems are worthy of note. The rough is not layered, and even a shot out of the so-called 'woods' is easy. Extrusions, particularly of bunkers, are poorly done (the railway sleeper idea at the ninth was good, and should have been utilised elsewhere; why not for bunkers?). Several greens and green surrounds have clearly been texture-painted and are completely unrealistic. Add this to the lack of theme, and you are left with a course that could still use a couple of hundred hours more work.
Overall There's no doubt you'll enjoy playing this course, but it offers little in the way of style or substance 20/50
