LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon

Well considering this is Patrick's first design to be up for grabs, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the splash screen and then saw the view from the first tee.

Although slightly disappointed with the sight of Whistlers Mountain in the background the view was very good. A water hazard was in front that was well finished off, the fairway undulated well and had a nice cut strip between it and the rough and the planting looked good and everything was nicely in scale, the only thing I did notice was that the bunkers didn't look that smooth in outline from the overhead.

Textures looked as if they were a mix of stock and custom but were none the worse for that.

There is some very interesting and original course design here, holes have been well thought out and some of the shots that await from the tee make a refreshing change from the norm, the long par 5 4th is a good example, I enjoyed the layout very much.

Everything from the tees to the greens have been finished off well, a little more work is needed in the bunker department, edges aren't bad but with the quality of the top courses this hasn't reached those dizzy heights yet, don't get me wrong, the bunkers are still of a high quality and depth and texture is excellent they aren't quite 100% yet. The planting, as I have said is good throughout and attention to detail is excellent.

The green design is second to none; greens are small, well guarded with tricky pin positions, the greens slope but not too much to make it unfair.

Water plays quite a large feature on the course too and this is also handled well and finished off nicely, as are the tees for that matter.

I have to say that the more I play the course the more I like it. The elevation changes are tricky to do at the best of times, but they have been executed with aplomb here.

This is a course where you won't benefit most by blasting your tee shot as hard and straight as you can, the driver is not always the best option here brains over brawn definitely.

Best Hole: Tough choice this, I have gone for the par 5 9th which is a long dogleg to the right, with a large lake to your right. You have to play a straight drive to the joint of the dogleg, you can't cut corners here. Your second shot is a 3 wood over the water to the narrow fairway guarded by two bunkers this should leave you with a wedge or 9 iron to a tiered double green which is raised from the water on the right, it is guarded by bunkers too, an excellent hole.

Overall: I am totally gob-smacked that Pat has come up with such a wonderful first course, it is the originality and obvious care and thought that has gone into the design that stands out most to me and his skills with the APCD aren't bad either. It does, in places, seem to lack just the tiniest of finesse and you feel as though he may have held back a little. All I can say is, if this is what you can do with your first official release I can't wait for the second! What are you waiting for?? Download now!
