LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Golf Club Augusta Taurinorum designed by Francesco Granata's second attempt at designing. To be brutally honest, I almost judged the course from the splash screen. I thought this was going to be one of those courses where it was poorly designed with a splash screen just for kicks. Well, after my computer rendered the course, I was immediately suprised. This course is a true gem.
What makes this course so special?
Simple. This is a shot makers course. No point and click golf. For example, the 1st hole is a 441 yard par 4 where a draw is a must to have a great angle for the approach. Shot making is essential due to the fact that this course has a lot of elevation changes that gives breath-taking scenery as well as a stiff challenge if not in the fairway off the tee.Another reason this course is special is the way the designer let his imagination run wild. The par 3's are a very good indication of that. And did I tell you that this course is a par 69? A true rarity in Links.
Pros? Cons?
The pros and cons were fairly balanced.Appreciated the way the textures matched. Good color and well done meshing. Course design is another pro. Every hazard is infront of you and you are well in control of what you need to do. Imagination on the par 3's is another pro. A mixture of uphill and downhill par 3's at variating lengths were well appreciated. Always nice to hit a 3 or 4 wood to a long par 3. I believe that is a part of old fashioned design that has changed in recent years. There are some trees that keep reappearing on holes, but it is nothing to really worry about. Hole 4, a par 5 has a ridiculously harsh slope that will run a good tee shot toward the rough. The yardage allows a player to go for the green in 2, but due to the slope, it is a dismal layup.
The cons were small, but need to be addressed. Some of the planting were spotty, but easily fixable. The one thing that bothers me most is that the greens have basic slopes. No sidehill slopes. Greens either run front to back or back to front.
Technical Aspects
Nothing wrong with it at all. Bunkers are nicely done, and the course looks like something any diehard golfer would pay top dollar to play. Everything on the course looks nicely groomed. The designer spent time cleaning up the mesh, which is greatly appreciated.
Other
The Hole Previews were nicely done. Since this course was thought to be an Italian course, the previews give yardages in meters.
My favorite hole
It was hard to pick a hole..but my favorite would have to be the par 3 7th. A downhill par 3 at 231 yards with water surrounding the back half of the green.
Course Difficulty
This isn't a really hard course, but it is for those who never try to draw or fade the ball while playing Links. Playing this course, I shot a -5 (64)
Playability
Anyone who downloads this course won't be disappointed with the quality. The only problem is for those with slow computers, there is a little lag with the rendering which makes for slower play.
Download Value
For those out there who like a challenge, I recommend this download. This course will be burnt to a CD for safekeeping for future enjoyment. At 44KB, it is a decent download, but well worth it for those with slower speeds.
