When I built my desktop, I didn't put in a strong CPU since I only planned to use it to get on the internet and also play Links 2003. I went the AMD route, and used the following:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor
Gigabyte X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard
Asus GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB Phoenix Video Card

It's been over 5 years now and I'm still happy with it, but I'd like to add some future protection by moving to a stronger CPU. The video card is doing well. So I'm probably going to change to one of these two.

AMD Ryzen 5 5500 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor (for $72!)
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800XT 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor

I've come across info that said all I need to do is to get into the Bios to make the change. I have no problem with that, but I sure would like to hear someone's voice on that who has done it. Does this sound like something simple to you? And thanks for your help if you can give any, and for your time if you can't.

I have not done it but would make the following points

The first thing is to make sure the CPU is compatible with the Motherboard.

Static protection is a must so use gloves or an earthing strap

You need to use fresh paste or a conductive pad between the processor and the heat sink.
