Maximum textures

Hello designers

I understand there is a ceiling to the number of textures that can be used.
Can anyone tell me what that limit is - and what happens when you reach it.
Thanks in advance, Colin

I have pushed past the limit of the maximum number of textures a few times when tiling multiple satellite images to a course plot. I originally thought the limit was around 100 unique 1024x1024 textures but the last time I past the limit was with 80 textures and a user.lib file size of 200MB. I now believe the texture limit is based on 200MB of textures in the user.lib.

It is very frustrating going over the vert or texture limit in the APCD. There is no warning when you save and exit. The issue arises when you try to open the course and the APCD crashes. Save to a new course file at regular increments!

Thanks so much mate (trust you are well!).

I am doing alot of tournament signage at the moment and I have created many (many!) new textures. But mostly all I need are 128s and 256s for that. So if the limit is based on the total size of the library, that's welcome news.

I just did a heap of work with new textures and it crashed when I was saving. Looks like it wasnt the total number of textures that was the problem :fcrossed: But, yes, the wise approach seems to be regular saving and testing.

Thanks again.

Colin

Having a real problem now................

I have used 181 textures  . About 120 of those are for my 3D tournament objects. Its alot, perhaps way more than ever used before :dunno: , but I am trying to create a tournament course environment that is uniquely detailed.

User.lib is still only 80MB, because I mostly only need to use smaller size textures. But clearly I'm on the threshhold - because in the last 48 hours, some versions are absolutely fine, some crash when saving, some crash when being opened in Links. So no doubt that the volume of textures is also important, not just the size. Cannot be opened in Links Extender.

Problem is I still need another additional 40 textures minimum.

Oh btw - it seems that once you've crossed the line with the total number of textures you can no longer use that version again (even if you then reduce the number of textures). You need to re-open the latest version that saved/opened OK then reduce the number of textures. Not confirmed, but it seems that way to me.

Colin,
Is it possible to create the 3D objects with the textures included, outside of APCD, and then import the whole object?
Good luck
Ian

Hi Ian - thanks

Have always meant to one day nail importing 3D objects, but not sure it can be easily done atm. My 3D work is mostly grandstands and viewing areas, so I need to be able to plant crowds in them and on them, as I've done before. Can you do that with an imported 3D object anyway?

No option it seems but to rationalise the use of textures (i.e there'll be less variety) and also convert some 3D objects into 2D. Such a disappointment - I was having alot of fun just going for it.

Your APCD crashes seem much more random than mine when I was over the texture limit. This makes me think it may be something else causing your grief, but we are talking about the APCD here! My crashes, when I was over the texture limit, was always when trying to open the course.

I vaguely remember a texture problem I had once where the APCD was mixing up the textures. I realized that the issue was with spaces in the texture names. The APCD wouldn't read the texture name properly after the spaces and jumbled the textures up. It's a long shot but maybe something like this is causing your problems.

3D objects are great for small, repeated objects. Tees and fences are perfect uses for 3D. If you have multiple variations on a texture then that would require unique 3D objects imported. It would be easier to do all that within the APCD. Planting on 3D is tedious work and seems to get jumbled up eventually with a V&S so I have avoided trying to do crowds.
