CANADIAN FIRES

Post by Jimbo »

It's sadly ironic that the CPKC Women's Open is underway in Calgary.but as you know North America is sustaining unprecedented heatwaves this summer.
The forests of central and northern British Columbia are particularly susceptible-smoke from earlier fires drifted all the way to the eastern part of the continent...northern states can expect similar problems this time.
Now the fires have extended to northern Alberta. Fortunately because of emergency services and the military there have been no fatalities so far and the people in Jasper were evacuated beforehand.
Anyway this morning most of the town of Jasper was gone. On a perfectly selfish note it would be a shame to see any damage to the sister course of Banff but that means nothing compared to people who have lost everything and one of Canada's greatest national parks and the wildlife....so far the fires are not posing a threat to southern Alberta but we haven't seen things this bad-ever.
Even Eastern Canada is at risk-including Cape Breton Island. It would have been so easy if we could blame all this on a careless camper or smoker but that's not the case.
Our prayers are for the firefighters and the people who have lost their homes.

It's an Act of God but according to the EMF's the Jasper infrastructure has been relatively unaffected, including Jasper Park Lodge.
Small blessings...🙏

I was referring to "Act of God" as used in legal terminology...look it up.
What happened in Jasper isn't particularly funny.
And neither are the fires in California for that matter.

This is amazing (and a blessing) but the "resurrection of Jasper is planned to take up to 2 years. There's a website showing the 5 step procedure (obviously they're still in the "planning" stage-step one)

As a side note-the lodge reopened this month (although there really won't be much to see except bulldozers) and the course is going to be restored...they say next season but I'm thinking that other projects will definitely take priority.

Anyway it's great news considering the disaster...the biggest issue now is finding long-term accommodation for the displace residents. local families have been very helpful but two years is still a long time.
