green settings using 'course settings'

Post by g3b »

Just out of curiosity how are green speeds & hardness, softness determined when using 'course settings' in game set-up?

Thanks,

Feel free to play around with it. So far there are other drawbacks when it is used, like limited distance from heavy rough, or some other difficulty, and you don't exactly know what your green speed is. Try it with Kapalua Plantation 09 and see if it affects you distances from the rough.

THESE COURSES ACCORDING TO PMGOLF DEFINITELY HAD DESIGNERS MAKE USE OF CUSTOM PROPERTIES AVAILABLE IN LINKS 1.07 UPGRADE DONE AROUND 2007. OTHER COURSES BEFORE THEN AND RECENT ONES IN REGARD TO CUSTOM COURSE SETTINGS I REALLY DO NOT BELIEVE HAVE BEEN DONE IN SUCH A WAY BY DESIGNERS.

In addition to the above list, I have in my database that the following courses were designed with specific "Course Conditions":

Walnut Grove Golf Course, Dec 1/2005, Art Patscheck, walnutgrovegc.crz, 81791928 bytes, www.linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=1631

Jungle Island, Feb 4/2006, Kristoffer Selberg & Andrew Jones, JungleIslandfinal.crz, 85436818 bytes, www.linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=1659

Nautilus Bay Tour Edition, May 23/2006, Adriaan Maarschalk, Nautilus_Bay_Tour_Edition.crz, 64484790 bytes, www.linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=1673

Shinnecock Hills HD Tournament Edition, Mar 15/2011, Robert Miller, ShinHillsHD_TournEd_locked.crz, 217341473 bytes, www.linkscorner.org/courses/course.php?crz=1996

Also, Linkster's most recent Augusta National has them as he mentions it in the "Course Notes" on the course page.

g3b, not quite sure what exactly you are looking for, but this link may help you:

viewtopic.php?t=11

Green firmness affects the reaction of the ball when it lands on the green (soft means a lot of spin, firm (challenging) means more roll.) Also, these settings affect how much ball roll you get on the fairways (soft not so much, firm (challenging) a lot more.)

Green speed does exactly as it implies. In the U.S., tournament greens seem to be set at a stimp meter setting of around 12 or 13 (a bit faster at Augusta,) except Hawaii where it seems to be more like 11. European courses, especially in the U.K., also seem to be around 11 typically. Slow green speed settings (in my mind) make the green like putting in mud. If you set your greens at firm (challenging) and fast (challenging) it's like putting on ice, although there are some players who like the challenge of that.

For shots out of the rough, some course designers have made it more challenging to get out of, and others make the distances achieved more like from the fairway with the exception that you get lots of roll after shots land in the fairway or on the green (not so much if you end up in rough again.) Having a downhill lie may affect this, however.

Since I only play real courses, I typically choose settings of medium for firmness and fast (challenging) for green speed.

Hope this helps.

For a little clarity on the courses I listed as well as pmgolf's list that badgolfer1 provided, APCD allows the designer to include their own custom green hardness and speed settings with their design. The courses listed above have those designer included custom settings. They can be accessed during course selection:

Obviously, you may use the link provided by dko and set the course up how you wish using the other six options in each dropdown.

Of the list here I see Walnut Grove. I remember it being significant as rough was meant to play as really brutal. Not certain when it was out in December 2005 that challenging conditions existed then.

http://www.linkscountryclub.com/links-2003-v107
Changes in Links 2003 v1.07 Update (Including v1.05 changes)
Changes as of 06/19/2008
Widescreen support has been added including HD resolutions
Integration of MOD (v1.06) settings now known as Challenging conditions.
New Gusty wind option
Ability to use a course designer's physics for a particular course instead of the normal conditions.
Custom tees are now available. You can determine which tees you want to use on each hole
Ability to use custom clubs. New club models have been included in this patch
Microsoft has removed support for the in-game MatchMaker so support for Direct Connection has been turned on for LTS/LTF and the Links Tour(LSPN).
Introduction of LTF Tournaments for offline tour operators.
Added an option of allowing or disallowing chipping on the green
Fixed a problem in Links Tour (LSPN) events where alternate courses were not found properly
Fixed a few other bugs in the game that were found while working on the update.

Here a word of warning that playing challenging conditions on older courses designed before that was possible to do so---those designers then might have had hillier greens and placed many pins unfairly on slopes. Playing courses with custom course design mode selected certainly is possible even though only a few courses their designers set up a certain way for them to be played. The results for most courses otherwise in Links not sure what default setting may come about for this.
