Nice job on that clubhouse too. I was just looking at the photo diff above and couldn't help but notice how good it looks in the Links version.

Hi migolfer
thanks for the lovely comments.
What a beautiful pic of a beautiful hole !
I agree, my bunker is too deep and I have remodelled it to look more like the pic(I hope)
I think the size and position relative to the green are ok tho. I use google earth for measurements and placement and I'm quite happy with it.
It's great to have people testing and probing the course to make it better. Keep up the good work.

Many thanks

Peter

Regards the shallowness of certain bunkers and such....this is likely to be remedied with the "Lidar" and "QGis" buzz goin on(in the Corse development forum) ....for future real-course devolpement/..this lidar.QGIS movement seems to be gathering real interest...the level of detail regards such as bunker depth and precise shape is likely to be solved this way I reckon...the level of detail username(Linkster) has achieved ...by all accounts seems to be very detailed indeed...think he is currently working on a St Andrews Old Course release at present...likely to be quite a way off I reckon...but I said before and will say again the lidar method is likely be the way forward..(eliminates the bulk of the grunt needed)...to get more real courses completed...just read about the sheer length of time it took the creator of Cambridge HD to get to the stage its at now...reckon the Lidar method will likely do away with the tremendous lengthy time some courses need to get to their "Final"...some small points Pete...played a few holes yesterday 6/or 7 of the front 9....noticed that at the 3/or 4 th hole the pano may need a touch up(the pano on these holes is very dark in places and the anti-aliasing is failing you a bit(talkin about the point it meets the horizon in places..maybe adjust by lining this point with a very minimized tree line too break up the anti-aliasing :dunno: ......the stream looks terriffic...at present don't think it has reflective water texture at this point(or is it a gravel/gully like I said dont have good knowledge of the real course lol).. be great if the Final has reflective water if it is a stream lol..

Hi morvio100

I have put in a tree line to mask the pano behind the town.
I have tried setting the burn to be reflective but then you lose the running water effect and it looks still and flat and there are lots of issues with reflective water, so I prefer the the burn to be non-reflective.

Many thanks
Peter

Great news ..Pete...Ill give the course a close inspection this weekend...haven't had alot of time this week...you've really captured those fairways beautifully...got caught out the other day...ball lie was on a slight mound on a fairway(them there fairways almost as tricky as Cape Wraith) ..didn't check the gradient meter..and sent a punch shot way off course...great work.... :notworthy:...not quite sure were on the same page regards what I was trying to describe as a stream or whatever...there seems to what looks like a steam running along the side of various holes(seperated by out-of bounds markings)...(not sure what you mean by burn..but)...knocked a few balls into the stream/or gully...unsure tbh..when i hit the ball a small distance when in the gully...the ball travels/landed and sounded like it was in gravel .....maybe you could confirm whether or the course has indeed streams/water hazards..and/or various gully/gravel traps...in various locations..???

Hi morvio

A burn in Scotland is a large stream or small river. The 3rd hole at Carnoustie is called Jockie's Burn because of the stream running across the front of the green and the 16th hole is called Barry Burn which is the main burn that winds its way through the course. In the winter the burns will be filled with water and sometimes overflow and flood the course. But in the summer the Barry Burn is a shallow running stream and all the other little "tributaries" of the Barry Burn like Jockie's burn are dry with a gravel bed.
So the burn at the 3rd, down the left of the 4th, running across the 5th(in two places), in between the 9th and 12th are all dry in the summer. Whereas the burn at the 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th are wet.

I'm looking forward to Linkster's tutorials about getting detailed LIDAR info into APCD to help speed up the process of building courses. I played Royal Birkdale yesterday and would really like to do that one next using the LIDAR info.

Many thanks
Peter

Im not saying whether or not its a good idea, but please know that alarduran is working on a new version of that course (which I believe will probably be pretty great) - see https://linkscorner.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1398

Perfect clarification..Pete..I completely agree with regards the Lidar/Qgis buzz...dl Qgis ...and try it..(I dl'd it some months back having read some interesting stuff on the TGC forums about it...didn't get the time to test it much) I posted a couple of interesting links about it in a post called 3d grass in the course forum I think/or search youtube for vids on QGIS very interesting stuff - while your waiting on the Linskter tutorial).....Linkster is on the right track and I commend him for leveling up Links2k3...thanks for the clarification..report back sun/or monday.... will play a full round on the magnificent Carnoustie 2022 this Sunday...

PS : start working on those stands/grandstands and crowds....only joking...incidentally a lot of the grasses you used and terffic...although judging by the second pic miggolfer posted you may want to add more yellow toned low level gorse grasses(the grass i suggest is widely used - can be seen on Bethpage and Royal Lytham/I think Ahernes Montgormery or Carton house - typically looks knee height - another small suggestion would be expose a "little" not much but a little more sand on some bunker walls just to break up the uniform look of the bunker walls maybe even blend some slightly different green/or yellow to the grass on the bunker walls (as in miggolfers second pic)- they look great as is - but would look even better with some variation)... regards the grose grasses.... pick your spots where to plant more yellow toned gorse grass (you should look into this - it is very evident the course needs this ..you just have to look at pics on google images to see the sheer amount of that yellow toned grass on the course) ...as a side note take a look at the way Sean Landry employed/blended a redish colored grass amid the yellow toned grasses on Royal Liverpool...it looks superb ...also take a look at the way McCoist/Stewart Parker employed/blended fairway and green textures with touches yellow this also looks fantastic....McCoists blending must be on par with Rob Millers.....:notworthy:

pps... Even if some one has beaten you to the punch on Birkdale...go with (or someone got with) Sean Landrys Royal Liverpool seek permission to up it ... its unlocked ...sean made a good start on it...that course could/would look fantastic - a similar color palette to Royal Lytham ..with the right approach/and care and attention, would look fantastic...would be better even still if someone managed to get the Lidar for it and got QGIS involved and started from scratch....Royal Lytham mark 2...Royal Lytham absolutely masterful APCD work....to see the club house alone ...is worth playing a round...

Fellow linksters, regarding Royal Birkdale: as family matters and work matters keep interfering and preventing me to deal with the APCD (the course barely progressed since last year's summer holidays), please feel free to take a shot on it using the new Lidar method.
Also, as I have amassed a bunch of course information (hole previews, pin positions from previous Opens, ...) please don't hesitate to ask for what you could need.

Regards.

Peter,
I'm looking forward to Linkster's tutorials about getting detailed LIDAR info into APCD to help speed up the process of building courses.
I have just started work on a course that Linkster downloaded for me with 3m grid and the detail is very impressive.

This shows the number of verts that need to be manipulated with a 3m grid on an average hole:

I have only worked on the course for about 20 hours, but I do not believe that LIDAR will make building the course any quicker. (At least the way I am working.)

My initial thoughts are that with LIDAR the build the number of hours to build a course will be more or less the same as without LIDAR, but the end product will be better.

I must add that the course I am working on does not have Google 3D so the only way to build this course is with a download from LIDAR.

Perhaps others that build with a LIDAR download can give another/better perspective.

Good luck.
Ian
