Re: St Andrews The Old Course 2022
Yes, first thing I noticed when doing this course is that the 3m square grid of LIDAR elevations didn't show all the fairway undulations. There are a couple things that are working against me with the course I shared. I really like that fairway texture but it is bland and doesn't show the undulation...

St Andrews The Old Course 2022
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lAcj8vL0AjWzSdSYITkdcKy1-tcW8XCv?usp=sharing I doubled my efforts to have this ready for The Open this week but I came up short. I debated if to upload this as an alpha course but there is a lot to do still. The core areas of the course are complete (tees, fai...

Re: Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses
For the USGS data site I gave a link for, search for a town near a course you are interested in in the upper right corner. Once you get the map centered roughly where the course is, go to the left side bar and select Elevation Products (3DEP). Select the 1m DEM data, and select All file formats. You...

Re: Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses
Thanks for the interest! I propose this to get us started; pick a real course you want to do, check the websites I mentioned earlier to see if LIDAR data is available, pick a grid density you want to work with and I will do your first course terrain for you. I am trying to get an alpha versi...

Re: Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses
Well this is getting really interesting.
I honestly thought there would never be LIDAR elevation data freely available for this one. Not sure how or if to proceed with this. I thought they signed their tournament rights to a game last year?

Re: 2022 US Open/Course Design Question
You can have a look around this course if you want, it is playable in Links 2003, but it is NOT the US Open experience you are looking for: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1VsQzwdv5aGFWP0Kr_j8CHAV4aLMH_PL8 I built this course quickly last week. It uses a high detail LIDAR survey of course are...

Re: Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses
Thanks morvio100 for the links. Had a look at the second video and it was interesting. I am no expert on QGIS, I just use it  . Big update on the LIDAR data sources. I just checked the USGS link that I posted earlier and found newly released data for a very prominent golf course in Georgia. R...

Re: Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses
Well it looks like the response to the idea of building real courses this way is positive. Here is a follow up to some of the conversation points so far. I generated a 2m x 2m x 0.1m grid of The Country Club to show how much detail can be achieved by importing a LIDAR DEM. It only took an evening to...

Using LIDAR DEM for Real Courses
Hi everyone! I feel the need to introduce myself. I am 37 and I have been playing LINKS and messing around in the APCD since about '99. Hard to believe it has been 23 years. I have never produced anything in the APCD worth sharing, I mostly just modify and tidy up courses for myself. Even though my ...
