This isn't a fantasy course in the sense that it has unusual objects, colors, pano, it's the hole shapes. You wouldn't find all of these hole shapes and hazards on a real course somewhere in the southwest. It has the look of a links course but again it isn't, it's just the way you would glorify the prairie. The tee boxes have a narrow rim of rock around them, which both a greens keeper and I don't appreciate but its narrow and not to obvious. He has a mowed fairway followed by a first cut, rough, deep grass, dry grass, and fescue, quite an assortment but they seem to blend into each other well and a nicely textured green with a fringe. His stone work for the cart path and the steps were an excellent piece of work. He had a splash of color under a number of trees that were rimmed by stone, the flowers are to be expected in a fantasy course but the rim around the trees just didn't fit. His selection of trees fit the theme of the course beautifully but the had a darkish look to them when you came close, something I never noticed in the beta test. There are many decorative bodies of water many with fountains that served as hazards also. His bunker work is beautiful and the ample fairways certainly had their share of them.
The elevation changes and the caddie were excellent and most enjoyable. Many was the time that I had to stop and think about the club and the elevation + distance for the second shots. My finishing statistics showed that the course played shorter than I thought, my drive average was higher than usual. The nice sized fairways were well guarded and with their unusual shapes were more than challenging. The greens were between small and medium, closer to medium, they were flat at the close putting area but just a little further out they were either undulating, sloped and most were tiered. The subtle breaks as I got a little more distance between the cup and the ball started to show nice gentle breaks. The greens are well guarded so take care with the second shots. Hole # 1 can be an excellent risk/reward hole to the far left; with a slight overswing it's worth the fun. Hole # 4 par 5, I took the right fairway and it put me in an excellent position for an eagle. On hole # 11 watch out for the elevated green, its much higher than it looks and takes a longer lw than I first thought.
As with his other 'Xilver' courses this was both beautiful to look at as well as a joy to play. They all have a similar look, and feel to them but all play differently and this one has a nice challenge to it. I can't encourage him to build better courses because you can't get too much better than this, he takes quite a while building his courses and they show it. With the new textures I'm certain that we will be seeing more and different types of courses from him. Is this a good download at only 24.1mb, definitely. Download this course and enjoy it many times.
