A portion of his readme:
West Ridge is a real course and is located less than a mile from my home. I have golfed it many times. Situated on the western side of the Salt Lake Valley, the course is not too far from the Utah Olympic Oval, where all of the speed skating events took place at the recently completed 2002 Winter Olympics. In fact, in one of my panorama photos I used in the creation of the course pano, the east bearing photo shows the unusual looking roof of the Oval in the midrange foreground.
One of the flaws I found in re-creating this course is the lack of mature trees on the actual course. It was built upon an abandoned gravel pit. Most all of the trees on the course are artificially planted trees; all are less than a few years old. Trees on the real course are few and far between--the recreation in APCD didn't look as nice as many of your courses that contain a full forest of trees. I thought about planting my own forest in order to make the course look nicer. I finally decided, however, to make it as real and as accurate as possible. .
This being a real course leaves little leeway for the designer to use his imagination, just his talents to recreate the course. This was his first attempt at design. His choice of colors for the course worked out well, the tee boxes, flat but lush looking fairway, light rough and heavy rough and the greens with fringe. The pano fitted the course very well and was a good choice, the electrical towers, buildings and townscape were an interesting touch and not often seen. While he lacks the skills for the perfect bunker I think he did quite well. There were very few bunkers and what there were turned out to be small and ineffective as a hazard as did the bodies of water, which also looked nice but didn't present any problems. The fairways really didn't undulate they had ridges that didn't set to well with my ideas of a fairway. The greens were over-sloped and tiered and often, too often seemed to be a little more than a real course would have. The greens were also varying in size, mostly small and very few normal sized.
Being the type of course it was, elevation changes were used most of the time and he did an admirable job with both them and the caddie. There weren't any outstanding holes in my opinion to warrant singling out as challenging but the fairways were large and you are able to play the game of huge drives, difficult greens and few hazards on a beautiful course with outstanding mountains. The very large fields of dry grass also made this a different looking course. The course was rather sparse as he said in his readme, I don't have a problem with that but why then is the download so large. Its not a course that will take your breath away but it's a rather pleasant one if you don't mind the putting. I wouldn't jump at it if I was on dial-up but it could be a nice diversion for broadband users. I don't consider this a must have or a keeper.
