LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Background: This is the first golf course posted to Links Corner by Mr. Largent. There is no read-me, so we have no expectations at all concerning this course.

Overall Impression: I have played lots of courses that don't really seem to fit their names, but this one definitely does. The Islands at Ocean Paradise is exactly what it says it is; Islands! Most of the holes have not only island greens, but island fairways as well. This is an 'over-the-top' fantasy course which succeeds at what it is meant to be. Fun! I had a blast playing this course. If you are one of those people who only like to play the picture perfect courses of Mike Jones, et al, then stay far away from this one. This is fantasy golf at its best. The construction of it could have been a bit better; but since this course doesn't pretend to be an Augusta National, what difference does it make? Every hole makes you just stop and stare. Now this course is definitely not for champ players. I truly think most champ players would never finish this course. Some day when I have some time to kill, I intend to play this course on champ mode and see how many balls I lose in the ocean. What a kick.

Playability: Well, since this is not a traditional course is any shape or manner, this criterion is kind of moot. It is not playable at all for champ level players, unless they are really, really good. One slight missed snap results in a water ball on just about every single hole. For pro players just relax and have fun; this is what the course is all about. The greens are generally very fun and interesting. There were a few bad pins and a few long carries over water, but what the heck; live with it!

Shot Values: Well, the only real shot you are asked to carry off is a straight one. Most of the greens and fairways are surrounded by water, so hitting it straight is a really good idea!

Visuals: This course is kind of fun to look at as well. There is very little planting, since most of the course is ocean. The water dominates most views. There is some lava rock and some type of volcano on the back nine as well. The few plants here around consist almost solely of palm trees. This course probably should have been named 'Waterworld' after that dreadful Kevin Costner movie. Water-water everywhere!

Technique: The one main drawback to this course, in my opinion, is the lack of technical expertise displayed by the designer. There were some shadows, lots of sharp texture transitions, unmapped faces and a complete lack of added objects and graphics. Although I loved playing this course, I couldn't rate it any higher because of these things.

Summary: This is a really fun and exciting fantasy experience. I had a great time playing here. For those of you who only like the perfect looking realistic golf course that the APCD is capable of making, then go ahead and skip this one. For the rest of you (like me) who like to play around on a fun imaginary course, and don't mind losing lots of golf balls, then go ahead and give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
