LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Background: This is the first golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Cotton. The read-me has no information about the course, so we have to check it out for ourselves.

Overall Impression: Wow, where do I start. This is a bizarre and fascinating imaginary golf course. I think it is listed as a Fictional course in the course pages, but it shouldn't be. This course has all kinds of wild and unnatural occurrences. It could never even come close to being constructed in real life, so I really think it should be listed as imaginary. The splash screen says something about Killer Golfers, so I guess that is what the KG stands for. I am not familiar with the Killer Golfers, so I could not tell you anything about them. But I am now familiar with this golf course. It is truly a wild experience. You go from hole to hole just waiting to see what comes next. The textures are very rich in color and the planting is unusual to say the least. I like a good fantasy course more than most people so I had a good time playing this course. Unfortunately, there were a few too many technical errors and playability issues for me to heartily recommend it, but it was fun nonetheless.

Playability: This is the main downfall of this course. There are a few too many holes that are almost unplayable. This course was obviously designed to be a great risk-reward type test. It succeeds at that on many levels, but there are a few too many times when the risk greatly outweighs the reward. Some of the fairways are so narrow as to be next to impossible to hit. The seventh hole is a good example of this. This hole has a split fairway with an ivy patch running down the middle. Now this would be fine, except that each of the separate fairways is less than 20-feet wide (see picture)! And you hit to these fairways from an angle, since this is a dog-leg hole! There are also some greens that were way too wildly sloped. The seventh green was basically the side of a cliff. The first hole, which is a par 5, has no lay up area for your second shot. You have to attempt a 250-yard shot (approximately) over water to get to the green.

Shot Values: Well, I have to say this is a hell of a course for shot values. You have all kinds of interesting shots to try and execute. There seems to be lots of blind shots, shots fitted into island fairways (see picture) and greens, and all kinds of other shots. There is not one boring shot on the course.

Visuals: This is a pretty wild looking golf course. The textures are very rich in color, the planting is unusual and there is lots of water and objects to keep you sightseeing. The Aviara pano is used, but you don't seem to notice it much. There is too much to look at on the course itself to really notice the pano.

Technique: This is another area that this course fails. There are many technical errors present. There are lots of sharp edges, sharp texture transitions, unmapped faces and bad shadows. Much of the course is actually very well done, but unfortunately it is the errors which seem to stand out the most.

Summary: Well, this is a tough one to rate. As for recommendations, I can definitely recommend it to people who like imaginary golf courses. It is actually a lot of fun to play for pro clickers who like this type of golf course. If it wasn't such a big download, I would suggest that everyone play a round or two just to see all the interesting holes. As it is, I would say to look at the pictures and decide for yourself. I can say to you for sure that it is quite an experience!

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
