LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Matt Lilly June 2002
Expectations: I have not played any of Alan's other courses, so therefore do not know what to expect. I am guessing by the user ratings and download size it is an amateurish 9-hole course. The ReadMe says this is a fictional course.
Visuals: There is a nice pano used, but the mountains featured seem to vary too greatly. At one point, there is a cliff reminiscent of the American southwest, and later you are staring at an Alaskan mountain range. Also, the mountains tend to repeat themselves in places and times they shouldn't. As far as the course goes, it's fairly nondescript. What you see is pretty basic, including fir and pine trees. There is a nice splash of color with a flowerbed on #8, but unfortunately that isn't carried over through the rest of the course. Bunkers can use some work, as can the transition areas.
Playability: This is a pretty easy course bearing no real challenges. You should have no problem posting a low score. However, there are a few blind shots that have to be contended with.
Layout: Again, nothing groundbreaking here. Very drab and predictable. As long as your drives are accurate, you're good to go.
Creativity: Not a lot of imagination was used. So much more could have been done to make this a stellar course. It had the potential, but it simply was not followed through on.
Sounds: No extra sounds were added.
Extras: No extras were included with this course.
Favorite Hole: #8
What Needs Work: Make things more interesting. Even by adding brick work around lakes, inserting flowerbeds along tee boxes, and creating risk-reward shots, you can improve an average course immensely.
Good Points: A basic understanding of the APCD has been displayed.
Final Thoughts: You are on the right track Alan. I would recommend beta testing your course prior to release to work out any bugs that might be present. By going the extra distance, you can help separate yourself from average designers and become great. Spend that extra time on a course before sending it out, and do not release it until you feel it is absolutely ready. You will be pleased with the results in the end.
