LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' May 2002
This course at times strikes me more as a fantasy course than a fictional one. Yes its Whistler Mountain and yes there are flowers in front of every rear tee box. The colors used for the tee areas, mowed fairways, (no first cut), greens and fringe looked very nice. The tee boxes and bunkers had sharp edges that were evident even to someone like me who doesn't look for them and the ridges on the fairways and greens were there and I don't believe they should have been so obvious. The trees often repeated themselves (hole #1) but he did try to mix them up. They used quite a few brightly colored trees and mixed them nicely into the greenery. The wide ranging assortment of hazards, bunkers, water, deep grass and rock fields could have made for interesting play but very often were not in play. The holes varied from medium fairways to narrow and so did the greens. Some of the greens were so sloped and tiered they were difficult to play from different angles (hole # 14). The initial landing area of my drive on hole # 3 was so sloped towards the bunker it didn't matter where I landed I rolled into it.
The elevation on this long (7634y) course changed rapidly and at times was very enjoyable since both the elevations and the caddie read correctly. The putting was changing with the distance because of the slopes and tiers, close you were fine, far and you had troubles. Some of the pin placements, and I play 'easy' were in impossible positions. The undulations and elevations in the fairways were acceptable but the indentations and oversloping was not.
Hole # 4 par 5, 596y, a dogleg right, 2 fairway bunkers, 1 large water hazard cutting across the fairway and 3 green bunkers. I drove down the right side of the fairway 283y, which left me 302y to the pin. Because of the water hazard that could not be crossed safely I used an 8 iron to lay up. This left me with 149y to the pin and another 8 iron for a flat green birdie. This was a perfect hole to try a risk-reward set-up.
Hole #12 par 3, 164y with a 48ft drop, fun hole. The green was surrounded by a bunker so I tried an 8 iron, couldn't do it again if I tried, 3.4ft from the cup.
Hole # 17, par 5, 521y, with a 31y drop, a long straight hole with 2 fairway bunkers and an island green with a bridge. A 327y drive to an unusual rise put me 201y from the pin, a 4 iron adjusted up put my ball almost 10ft from the cup and an eagle on this flat green.
This course was a mixed bag, different sized fairways, sloped or flat greens weird protrusions in the fairways and greens but for the most part it was playable. It wasn't a joy to play but it can be done with a minimum of frustration. The best thing that could have happened to this small download of a course would have been a few beta tests to show them where the frustrating parts and the glaring errors were. It is a course with a few fixes on some fairways and greens might have been a good little download. Should you download and play this course, with all of the good courses coming out faster than we can download them I'd say only if you play 2 or 3 times a day and are looking for something to do. It's not a winner.
