LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chuck Clark May 2002

Background: This is the first golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Deschamps. The read-me has almost no information other than the designers name and course type (Imaginary). We have no expectations other than this course must have something to do with France, so let's get on with it.

Overall Impression: Well, this course makes a strong impression on you from the first hole on. Some of these impressions are good things and some are not so good. The first thing that jumps out at you is the textures. As you can see from the pictures, there is an unusual mix of textures that great the eye. They don't match up well at all and are a bit glaring. The apron around the tees especially didn't look right to me. That texture is so smooth and even looking it almost looked like Astroturf. The second thing that you will undoubtedly notice is the pano. It is a custom one that is very interesting. I am not familiar with Paris (or France), but I am guessing that this pano was shot in that city. I think you can see the Eiffel Tower in the distance and probably many other landmarks as well. The pano makes it seem that you are playing golf in a park in the city of Paris. Not a bad thing to tell the truth.

Playability: This course is unusual in this regard. It is fairly open and flat, but many of the fairways are pretty narrow and most of the greens are tiny! When I say tiny, I mean tiny! The eighteenth green is a perfect example. It is about 25-FEET in diameter. Most of these itsy-bitsy greens are pretty flat and there are wide areas of fringes and aprons around them, so you will have lots of easy chips. But don't expect to hit a high percentage of greens in regulation here. There are a number of interesting risk-reward type shots with split fairways and tight fits around the deep bunkers. The texture used for the deep rough areas is also listed as a hazard. You can play out of these areas, so it is no big deal, but it is strange anyway.

Shot Values: As stated above, this course is fairly level. There is not much in the way of up, down and side hill shots. I also can't remember any shot where I had to shape something around some an obstacle. You will have lots of easy chip shots, but not many long putts here.

Visuals: Like I said above, this course is fairly unusual looking. The textures and the pano really stand out. Personally, I didn't care for the mix of textures used, but the pano was interesting and different. It didn't seem to quite fit the course very well though. At the border between the pano and the sky there seemed to be some kind of inconsistency. I am not a graphic artist, but they didn't seem to mesh very well. I also didn't like the part of the pano which faced away from the city. The trees (?) in this part of the pano didn't seem to mesh very well with the planting on the rest of the course and they also seemed to be out of scale with the rest of the course. I did like the planting done on this course however; it was varied and well done. There was a lack of under planting near the fairways, but this seemed to fit the park-like atmosphere.

Technique: The APCD technique showed here was pretty good. There were a few small issues like sharp texture transitions, especially around the bunkers, but everything else was fairly well done. I would have liked to see a bit better planting around the fairways and hazards, and a little more imagination to the greens. Some of the tee boxes were very cramped as well. There were some which were not even big enough for the markers to be set on either side.

Summary: An unusual course to say the least. You may want to take a look, just to sightsee a bit in France. The golf course itself leaves a little bit to be desired, but you will remember it at the end of the day. That is more than I can say for some of the courses I have played. I would love to see this designer in another course or two and see what he has learned.
