LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' July 2002
This is not the award-winning rendition of Sawgrass, this is the second one I have played and reviewed, I understand there might be another out soon. Lets see how this one is for now. His tee boxes, mowed fairways, rough without first cut, greens and fringe were nicely blended shades. His use of pine needles as an undergrowth which looked a little thicker than most gave a nice feel to the course and kept the download size small. He repeated a very obvious tree on every hole throughout the course many times on the same hole, it was the very distinct one with the heavy trunk and the moss on the side, evident on the right side if the tee box of hole # 10. The tee areas were quite bare without crowds, tournament or other objects. Unfortunately even to an APCD untrained eye such as mine the errors were all over the course, from the red lines on the left bunker on hole # 2, the black lines on the greens (hole # 1), heavy shadows in the bunkers, large, as you see in one of the screen shots, mounds in the fairway on hole # 4. These are just a few that I can mention but there are more. The water hazards did have the wood planking surrounding them that is on the actual course. The course is very attractive in the top view but at ground level I believe that the designer in his attempt to do such a difficult course bit off a little more than he could chew. OK, I got to the world famous hole # 17 and my worst fears did not come true, it was laid out very nice with the exception of about 40 trees that could be seen from the green that were all alike, an annoying sight. This hole had a scoreboard, the only tournament object that I found on the course.
His hole previews were very nicely done but they showed 4 tees and not one hole had 4, they all had three, yes I checked and I was at the back tee. His elevation and caddie worked very well, his layout of the course looked as accurate as it could with all of the errors. The fairways were nice sized and the greens on the small size as the both should be. This course was much too much for a first time designer to take on but all in all it was very playable. My ani liked the long drives and the fairly easy greens, he let out his usual grunt of pleasure when a long putt was sunk, but what does he know, he's not a real person, just a G.I Joe in a sweater. Tell you what, download this course, don't think of it as Sawgrass and overlook the poor workmanship and enjoy a very nice round of golf on a very small download of only 12.5mb. I claim that I only rate a course on its playability but some of the workmanship has to creep in, so my score will try to reflect mostly the nice play of the course.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
