LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chuck Clark May 2002

Background: This is the first golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Wood. The read-me has scant little information so I have no anticipation of anything here. Here is what Mr. Wood said in his read-me:

"This is the first course I've ever made. I tried to make it have a realistic layout and be fun to play."

Overall Impression: Well, I hate say it, but it is obvious that this is a first effort. Although Saskatoon has an interesting layout and is fun to play at times, there are just too many technical errors for this course to be taken seriously. Beta testing could have really helped, because there are the makings of a great golf course here.

Playability: Despite the obvious errors, this course is actually quite playable and fun. A few of the errors affect playability and the greens are over the top at times, but all and all this course is not too bad. I did find a few really bad pin positions though, right in the middle of steep slopes.

Shot Values: Well, I have to admit, I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about this aspect. When you look at and play as many courses as I do, it becomes hard to spend a lot of time thinking about these things when the course is obviously poorly constructed.

Visuals: I actually thought that visually, this course is quite attractive. Mr. Wood seems to have a pretty good grasp on planting techniques. He integrates the planting and hazards fairly well and I enjoyed the water holes on the back nine (14, 15 and 17) a lot. The tee areas however, were very simplistic looking and used stock shapes throughout.

Technique: This is the main area that this course fails. There were many sharp texture transitions, bad mesh work, unmapped faces and other smaller errors. The textures were stock (I think), and there was no second cut around the fairways. The bunkers were simplistic and unfinished; they had no lip or edge to give them a bit more realism. There were no added features such as Previews and such which are not really that important to me. But there was no Cameo either, which I think is quite important.

Summary: This course and this designer have a lot of potential, in my opinion. If Mr. Wood is willing to put in the time to really learn how to use the APCD (and get some beta testers) he could be a top designer. I really thought that the layout of this course was very well done and quite interesting. The water holes on the back nine were fun to play and left me wishing for better construction work by the designer. I can't really recommend downloading this course, because there are just too many errors here, but I am really looking forward to Mr. Wood's next course with, hopefully, some better technical work on display.
