LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chuck Clark June 2002
Background: This is the third golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Hawkes and Mr. Peloquin. The first two designs, Island Links and Pelican and Hawk Valley were both released in March. There was some sort of problem with Pelican and Hawk Valley; the reviewers assigned to take a look at it could not even open the course in Links. Island Links was not very well received and looked to be a first effort. Hopefully, the designers of Hawk Woods have learned from their mistakes. The read-me has scant little information, other than the course type and the designers names. So, with no other information to form any expectations, we move on to the course.
Overall Impression: First impressions include: huge greens, wide fairways, lots of flowers, nice planting, unfinished bunkers, unmapped faces, bad shadows, lots of water, interesting layout and a very long course.
Playability: This course is generally playable, but very LONG. It is 8,137 yards from the back tees. The sixth hole is a 715 yard par 5! Wow, that has to be a record. I hit driver, 3-wood and 5-iron. Talk about a three shot hole! But the fairways are very generous and the greens are huge (I had a few 100-foot putts). Unfortunately though, there are lots of technical errors which can affect playability at times and some greens that had some pretty wild slopes as well. In addition, a few of the holes also had some unrealistically long forced carries as well. The sixteenth hole requires a 270 yard long drive off the back tee to carry a water hazard. The tenth hole was another one with playability issues. I hit a perfect drive right down the middle and was completely blocked by a row of trees. Maybe the idea was to lay back a bit, but I still felt like I was on the second hole at Devils Island for a moment there.
Shot Values: This is pretty much a 'grip it and rip it' type course. There is lots of water to avoid, but that is the main strategic hazard. Oh, you will probably also have some very long putts to negotiate as well.
Visuals: The textures used appear to be stock ones. The planting was generally very well done, with lots of flowers used to good affect around tees and some greens. The pano is the Princeville one, but it does seem to fit the course pretty well. The technical errors were pretty glaring though, so they distract from the overall appearance of the course.
Technique: This is the major place that this course fails. There are many technical errors. These include: bad shadows, sharp edges, unfinished bunker edges, unmapped faces and topsy-turvy cart paths. Much work is needed in this area to really bring this course up to snuff with the better ones.
Summary: Although this course is a very small download, I really can't recommend it to anyone. There are just too many errors. I did think that the layout was quite intriguing though. I think that the designers have some really interesting ideas for golf holes, but they need to back these up with solid APCD work. They need to remember the old adage: 'Rome wasn't built in a day'. Building a golf course in the APCD takes many hours of hard work to really get it right. I would love to see another course from these guys when they have learned how to really complete a course in the APCD. Guys: 'Think Mesh'!
