LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' May 2002
The shades of green chosen for the tee box, mowed fairway, first cut, rough grass, greens and the fringe worked very well together. The scrub grass undergrowth was a very nice addition and along with a variety of bushes made the trees look much heavier plated than they were. On hole # 13 you can actually see the bridge across the water in the top view, on most courses you just have to hope that there was one. His bunkers were well made in this his second course. The tee areas seemed to be a little to empty, bare, to me and could have used some 'dressing up'. The majority of fairways were a shade under medium and a few were just outright narrow and angled too sharply to use a driver of the tee. You'll have a very good chance to see his bunker work; the course is littered with them. The greens are on the small side and can be hit but I found myself chipping from the fringe more on this course than on most. Sounds like fun doesn't it.
The elevation and the caddie were perfect, which always makes the course more enjoyable. He had excellent fairway bunker placement and used quite a few water hazards as well. You would think that the greens being small would be difficult enough but they were very well guarded also. I can hear people complaining that there are just too many bunkers and water hazards on this course but that's what makes for good play. I haven't enjoyed avoiding so many bunkers since Hunters Wood and with the exception of those few very narrow holes this would have been a close competitor of Hunters. You can do quite a bit of corner cutting on this course, hole # 17, and I found holes # 15 and # 16 enjoyable.
Hole # 5 par 5, 547y, I passed the first bunker and ended up between the 3 bunkers with a safe drive of 283y. The pin was 260y and I had to go for it, the green was small and had two bunkers and a rather large water hazard. My 3w put me on the thick grass just between the water and the green with a slightly more than 30ft chip, an eagle for you a birdie for me.
Hole # 9 par 5, 566y, a slight dogleg ending with a small green with 3 bunkers. Along the way to this green my drive will have to be an accurate one because of the first set of three bunkers guarding this narrow fairway and yes there is a water hazard running the playing length of this hole. After a safe 284y drive, what to do with the remaining 272y to the pin. Using my 3w I cut across the water and bunker for 260y to the green and a 36ft putt on the mostly easy greens.
Easy greens with a few reasonably sloped ones, smaller that normal fairways with a few narrow ones thrown in, heavy bunker and water hazard use and mostly well shaped holes. Sounds like a nice round of golf, well it was. I enjoyed it with the exception of the few sharply angled narrow fairways. It is a very enjoyable course and an extremely small download compared to most of the ones we are seeing lately. I would wholeheartedly recommend this course for download and for a pleasurable time.
