LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart April 2001

First Impression: This is the first course designed by Warren Wilson. It is a fictional parkland course with a lot of the same looks similar to an American links style setting. Although not many large trees are found in this design, The remainder of the course is full of small brush, grasses, and smallish trees. The terrain is very undulating and that makes for a game requiring precise shots in order to score well. The trees and bushes tend to be brown in color and the main area of rough is brown as well. The grasses planted look very nice for the course and it adds to the overall realistic affect.

The course played at a very long 7500 yards from the back tees. The views from the tee boxes are very good and allow you to see the majority of the hole from those locations. Many of the approach shots will be challenged by uphill/downhill lies. The greens are not to difficult to putt on and that at least evens out the difficulty found while trying to approach the green. The rough is not too deep, but the shrubs and grasses will cause a few shots to be underhit.

The overall design is very well done. Many streams and ponds run throughout the area and often come into play on many shots. Several times a rock formation can be seen and most often then not....they are prevalent around the water hazards. The orange bunkers are plentiful and very well crafted. They often fall in line with either the average tee shot or fairway shot. You really need to be careful due to many fairways bottleneck at the typical landing areas making for a tough decision off the tees. The course setup is very parkland while the undulating terrain and the vegetation make it look a little like a Links style course. This is definitely a major factor in its attraction to many types of players and probably a very long time on many hard drives.

If you want a well laid out course with a very unique look....this is your baby. Very well done in many aspects. Warren can only get better.

Custom amenities: Many things can be seen here. The panorama was very nice and the buildings were a great addition. Ball washers and water fountains were found at many tee box locations.

Greens: Nicely shaped...these greens wont be a huge challenge, but do offer a very fair challenge.

Fairways: Very well shaped and very undulating at times. You will be lucky to find a flat landing zone. A second cut of rough was noted.

Tee Boxes: They were very flat and usually planted on hill tops. This makes for a very nice view from many tee boxes.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: They were very plentiful and were very well shaped. They were also lowered and had apparent lips. I was not to sure about the sand lips.....they would have looked better if the sharpness had been set to 0 and just naturally lowered into the bunkers. Overall this was quite good.

Planting: Very very good in this area. Trees were not forced into unreal locations. Shrubs, grasses, and smaller plants were planted to add to that links style look. This was easily the best part of the course. Well done!

Best Hole: Several holes were very interesting. I chose the finishing hole that was a short par four that has a GREAT second shot over a river filled ravine. Great looking hole.

Overall: A very good parkland/links style course with exceptional planting. The original hole layouts may keep this on your hard disk for a long time.

James Wood's thoughts..
This course has yet another different look to it that I find is very appealing and also important if you want your course to find a permanent place on someone's computer. The elevations though, particularly the slopes on the greens, were very unrealistic. Too many undulations and too many slopes that would not occur on a real course make this fictional course a chore to play.
