LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' May 2002

Obviously with such a large download comes heavy planting, I have a P-4 1.5 gig with 512 rdram and this course was slower rendering than Pacific Breaks, which wasn't slow for me. Anyway back to the course, he did a spectacular job on this course both in aesthetics, APCD work and the playability for a fantasy course wasn't bad at all. The combination of greens used here for the separate tee boxes, mowed fairways and good looking greens, blended well with the first cut and the fringe around the greens. The brightly colored trees and bushes mixed in with the normal green trees was very well done as well as the spectacular rock and plant work done on or near the water hazards. His bunkers were very well made. A huge amount of work went into the building of this course with its fences, wood or stone, rock hazards, plant gardens, bridges, ships and water hazards. The only parts that didn't set to well were ' the mountain' (Whistler) of course, and the red brick type work at each tee area, way overdone and even for a fantasy course not too good looking.

The elevation and the caddie were some of the best I've seen, a pleasure on a course were you had to skirt around unusually shaped holes loaded with bunkers in their ample fairways and medium to large greens that too had their share of bunkers. The fairways as I mentioned were more than fair sized but he cut your chances by half with the hazards in them. The greens were another story; they for the most part are of good size and played fairly easy. Take the birdies and eagles when you can, greens like #'s 10, 14 and 16 are very sloped and could cause you trouble depending on your pin placement.

Hole # 5, 525y, a long drive put me 295y down the middle of this rolling fairway and I only had 221y to go. Even though I'm standing on a slope my 2 iron with an overswing took me past the water hazard, all the bunkers to within eagle range. I'll be happy with a birdie.

Hole # 6, par 5, 572y, aiming for the center of the first bunker I drove 285y and only, only?, had 291y to the pin. I couldn't see the point of landing on the front edge of this very large green and debating with myself about chipping. I opted for the left fairway 252y and 79y from the pin. A lw put me in perfect birdie position.

Even though the course is and looks like a fantasy course the holes are very playable and not too contrived like some courses of this type. It was well done, long, and a bit of fun. It is not a keeper but it's certainly not a loser. It's the kind of course you download and play occasionally. The size, that's the biggest drawback here, its fine for high speed users but I wouldn't spend my time with it if I were a 56k user unless you are a die-hard fantasy lover.
