LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' May 2002
This is course number 13 by this designer, one was a collaboration. I'm sorry to say that I have never played one of them until this. The tee boxes were nice as were the checkerboard fairways, brown Bermuda grass rough, (there wasn't a first cut) and a good looking blend of fringe into the green. The blinding orange, pink, red and yellow trees and bushes that made up this course were a fitting addition to this fantasy course that included a mountain covered with these trees and colors. The orange-brown sand in the many bunkers was very well integrated into the blend of colors. For the most part the fairways were narrow to less than medium and the greens ranged from medium large to small but always well guarded, as were most of the fairways by nicely formed bunkers.
Since this is a mountainous-wooded course the elevations varied greatly at time and I found both the elevations and the caddie to be very well done. Unfortunately after enjoying the front nine holes even with some unnaturally shaped dogleg narrow fairways the back nine became intentionally blocked at times or just plain target golf, the feeling was that he ran out ideas. I ran into this just a few days ago with another course that didn't play as well as this did on the back nine. When you have four islands including the tee island and the green island I would call that boring target golf. The greens on the front nine were reasonable and on the back nine they were a little sloped.
Hole # 9 par 5, 544y, with a 39y drop, this long narrow bunkerless fairway led to a well guarded green. The green was surrounded on three sides by water and had bunkers at the front one side and back. My 322y drive left me an approach shot of 211y with a slight drop but I was also standing above the green so I chose a 5 iron. I didn't want to hit to the rear of the hole, I wanted to stay in front because of the slope of the green to the back. I landed a little short, this is possibly an eagle hole for a good putter.
Hole # 12, par 5, 657y, fairway, rough, fairway, water hazard, green. After a drive of 287y I had 346y to go, the tree can be in the way, to avoid this either hit long or use a 3w of the tee. I hit long and, my next a 3w punch of 262y got me by the tree and I was left with an 85y lw to the pin and a birdie. Think about that tree if you play this hole.
Hole # 18, par 5, 583y, the four island hole, the tee box is on island #1, #2 is drivable at 299y. When I drove to island #2 I drove over the left side of the tree, I couldn't hit over the tree and there is a bunker on the left of this narrow island. You're either in the drink or hitting the tree if your not careful. You can get to the green from here but I had a 47y putt (mulligan). I went to island #3 with a sw, 108y and that left 188y to the pin. Solution: a flop 2 iron (to clear the tree) a pw and a 7 iron, it works and its target all the way.
All sounds confusing, it is and not really worth all of the trouble, and you say I'm enjoying myself. If you think playing that hole was tough you should read my notes.
I fully realize that this is a fantasy course and to try to approach it any other way would be sheer folly. After saying that, I have played many fantasy courses that were much more inventive than this, target golf is not my game. The front nine were enjoyable and I only hoped that after designing so many courses he had a true hit on his hands and we had a new well made attractive playable course. Well it is all of those things, but just boring in the playability department for the back nine. If you are a true fan of fantasy I would say download it but for others downloading would be a crapshoot. You may like it and you may not. I wasn't particularly fond of it and certainly wouldn't be keeping it, but don't let that stop you.
