LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner' April 2002

While soft music plays on the first tee you get ready to tee off on a beautiful English style links course, it's a mixture of both worlds. You are playing a links course but with trees and other decorative objects. With its low wide far off pano and artfully selected shades of green for the textures at the tee box, mowed fairway with its fringe and rough to the small greens with their fringe. In the areas where he planted heavy growth of trees he had both an undergrowth and brush that enhanced the varied selection of trees used. The water hazards and streams had a distinctive tall grass both planted around and in the water to carry the gentle green links colors up to and in the water. Water hazards, bunkers, streams these are a few of the many that will be there if you stray from the fairway or fail to hit the greens. The fairway bunkers, well constructed are placed both where they will do the most damage and the green bunkers are waiting just outside each of the small greens to grab you before you can make that ever elusive birdie. The biggest hazard of all are the holes themselves, with fairways that are wide and narrow depending which part your looking at or aiming for and greens that are very small but fair. The greens if you get close are a gentle putting friend but don't stray to far or they will be tiered and slightly sloped and more than difficult, they are a joy.

The elevations are changing here on just about every hole and a good elevation and caddie setting by the designer are important to an accurate game, have no fear his settings are perfect. To have not just a good but also an excellent course you must have imaginative holes. He has accomplished that by varying the fairway size and making doglegs not look like doglegs. The putting is gentle up close and a bear far away. His risk reward holes are few but when you get to them, they are fun.

# 9 hole, par 4, 342y, with a 29ft drop, this is a very tempting risk reward hole. The fairway ends at 242y and is followed by a creek cutting across the fairway, and then you pick up the fairway again at 290y. There isn't a 'gain' if you cross the creek because the green is close enough for a short iron shot either way. The temptation and yes the challenge, can I cross the creek? Go for it! With a slight overswing and perfect hit on the 6 o'clock hashmark you can make it, I did at 293y, ok so I took a few mulligans. A most enjoyable hole if you want to risk it.

# 12 hole, par 5, 536y, the fairway is, large and narrow, straight and winding, got that? I had a 288y drive up the fairway with only one bunker that could possibly come into play. With 311y remaining I had to cross a very wide fairway to a narrow one that had 6 bunkers, 3 to a side. I had to use a 2 iron, anything else would have carried me into the rough that's before the green. An 87y approach shot, piece o cake! The green is small and has a large bunker on the right and a tree on the front left. This also was an enjoyable hole with distinct birdie possibilities.

This course was, is and will be in the future a very popular one. The holes are very imaginative, and the course itself is quite beautiful and as I said in my opening a bit different from the links courses that we are used to playing. Not only the design was different but also the construction was excellent. He put the little things in that give you a sense of being at a special place at the right time, from the cattle grazing at the # 5 tee, the few but distinct sounds to the clubhouse at the final hole which made this a fine finish to an outstanding course. I must tell you to download this course and to have as wonderful a time playing it as I did both my first time when it came out and now as I review it. Please enjoy it as I have.
