LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Pete Dixon March 2001

Well I think most things have already been said regarding this superb fictional course designed by Mike, who as we all know is a real time professional golfer over here in the sunny UK and he has used his obvious knowledge to produce possibly the best course available for Links on any format including Microsoft's own designs.

The course is Parkland and is definitely a British style in its design, wonderful planting, exquisite bunkers, First rate custom terrains and wonderfully designed greens are the order of the day here, this is not a blast and hope course, it is definitely one for the tactician especially if you up the ante and make conditions tough.

Fairways are mixed in that some are really wide, such as the first, others are narrow and guarded by cunningly placed bunkers which, even when you think you have hit a perfect drive you may find yourself rolling into sand. The fairways all have a cut of semi rough in between the fairway and the rough and you will definitely be penalised if you stray off the track too much either by out of bounds or unplayable lies, pretty much as you would find on a proper course and sloping lies will push your shot horribly making you realise how the topography really affects your shot.

The tees are well presented and the custom cart paths are seamless and not concrete but what looks like tree bark or seashells crushed down and makes a nice change.

The greens are well tiered in places making it essential you pick the right club for your approach as you will need to get on the right tier or be in all sorts of trouble, other than that they are a fair test, if you get your approach right.

There are also water hazards throughout and again these are finished superbly and have really good depth.

Planting is also well thought out and there are just odd splashes of colour around that catch the eye and enhance the course.

The Bunkers are probably the best I have seen, superbly finished with lots of depth and nice texture in the sand, watch out Mr Gearheart!!!

Best Hole: Lots to choose from, but I am going for the par 5 16th with its drive over water onto a narrow fairway, your second to the green looks innocuous enough, but there is a stream just waiting for your shot, and caught mine out several times, you have to hit your second with absolute accuracy and distance or it's that plop sound! The green has what seems like a valley, two higher tiers on the outside with a lower one in the middle, which again makes accuracy essential.

Overall: What can I say. An absolute treat to play, hard to fault and when is your next one coming out???? This is definitely a course where you are rewarded with skilful shots but penalised for being rash and foolhardy. If you haven't got it yet and been put off by the big download, don't be, it is a must have course.

Links Corner Design Analysis

Before this release, the Previews of this course gained it the publicity it perhaps warranted. The screenshots of those tight pin positions on beautiful looking greens was enough to make people begin the download of eternity. It has to be said, the Course at 64mb is simply the biggest seen and may be the biggest ever. For that size alone, it needs to withstand the publicity it created.

Fortunately, it just manages it. The Course is one of those that most will want and keep. The visuals of each hole are simply good enough to watch a round, but to play is a bonus. It isn't an easy course either, with the greens being tiered throughout the course, almost with the Devils laughter lines. Add the planting of the pins and some scores may be tough to achieve. There is little to fault this course, except that huge filesize. And if it was scrutinized, it doesn't show that the extra objects used were really needed to warrant the inflated download.

Lacy Gearheart's thoughts..
A very good course that plays exceptionally well. Well planned out design that will appeal to all. I was not a huge fan of the unplayable lies, but this just makes the course even more difficult. The best fictional design to date. No flaws noted
