LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Chuck Clark April 2002
Background: This is the first golf course released to Links Corner by Mr. Hall. I don't know if this is the first course he has ever done, but it would appear so. The read-me just states that this is a fantasy course and has the designers name. I could not tell you the significance of the name Allison, other than guessing about it, so I won't speculate.
Overall Impression: This is quite a bizarre and interesting golf course. As the designer stated, this is a fantasy course. There are lots of wild and interesting holes which keep you guessing what will come next. The elevations used are fascinating and large. It would be a fantastic course if the designer was a bit more proficient with the APCD. Unfortunately, the technical errors take away from what could be a really fun experience. The designer has some great ideas for fun risk-reward type holes; but this course is very inconsistent. Many of the features change from hole to hole, especially the tee boxes. I got the impression that this was an experimental course. The designer was trying out everything in the book. Some of the experiments worked and some didn't. This course also has lots of extrusions, so be warned. I never got any wild bounces, but you have been warned; they're out there waiting for you.
Playability: Well, despite the wild elevations and bizarre holes, this course if generally playable. The fairways are generous enough and the greens big enough. There are some impossibly deep bunkers and a few pin positions that are too severe, but generally the course is ok.
Shot Values: This course definitely keeps you thinking. You will have lots of up, down and side hill shots to execute. There are some blind shots over water, so play with the top cam open. There are also some reachable par 4's which I always like in a course.
Visuals: Well, the visuals are very interesting. The planting is pretty well done and the elevations are interesting to look at. They are huge too. You have some hills and bumps that are out-of-sight. You can actually play off some of these Alps like pinball on the golf course.
Technique: This is the main area that this course fails. There are numerous technical errors. There are many sharp edges and texture transitions. Some of the areas looked unplanted (?), but maybe they are meant to look like that. There were extrusions used on the fairways and greens in places and not in others (at least from what I noticed). There were some badly finished bunker lips and some rouge sharp edges.
Summary: This is an extremely interesting golf course. If you can overlook the technical glitches and you like lots of wild risk-reward type holes, then give this one a try. If you don't like fantasy type holes or wild, unnatural elevations, then don't. I would love to see this designer do another fantasy type golf course when he learns how to use the APCD better. He has some great ideas and some fantastic strategic holes in his mind (obviously), but he doesn't have the technique to back it up yet. This is a fun course though!
