LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by
Chuck Clark
March 2002

Background: This is the fourth golf course released by Mr. Slosser, all of them in February. None of them seem to be very well done judging by the ratings (official and user). I did one of those reviews, so I don't have many high expectations. In fact it seems that Mr. Slosser is more interested in quantity then quality. There is no read-me included with the miniscule course file, so we just have to proceed to the course.

Overall Impression: This is another cookie cutter course released by Mr. Slosser. His courses are done with the least amount of fuss around. He uses stock textures, redundant planting, stock shaped greens and very little elevation change. This makes for an easy but mundane golf course. He used the Whistler pano again and the same pine trees everywhere on the course. There are thousands of them in fact. Now using the same tree over and over doesn't punch up the file size very much, but it sure doesn't look very realistic either.

Playability: This course is very playable. Of course I have to say that, since I shot the very first sub 60 round I have ever shot in L2K1. But being playable and being interesting are two different things. Flat, easy and simple are the three words that come to mind when recalling my round.

Shot Values: Not much to talk about here. There is a lot of water used here and there, which keeps you on your toes, but not much else. Every par 5 is easily reachable but I shot a 59 without a single eagle. There was not one hole that really stood out in my mind, since they look very much alike. It is really hard to remember much else.

Visuals: See above. There are some brightly colored trees and flowers here and there, which add a bit to the views, but these are not enough to save the course from itself.

Technique: Mr. Slosser really needs to actually spend a bit more time doing a golf course. He needs to look at some of the top courses available and get an idea about what we have come to expect in a course. Unfortunately, you really need to spend hundreds of hours and (sometimes) many months doing a course. As for this course, there are numerous technical errors. Redundant planting, bad edges, stock green-shapes and sharp texture transitions were just a few.

Summary: I have run out of anything to say about this course. Since the designer does not wish to spend any time building a course, I shouldn't have to spend much time reviewing it as well. Enough said!

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
