LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by
Joe Turner `Loner'
February 2002

His mixture of tee area, mowed fairway, greens, a rough with out a first cut or low rough were all blended well, there was no color to speak of. With this small download he didn't use an undergrowth of any kind, the trees seemed to be 'stuck in' or floating. He repeated the same trees often as seen at the #12 tee. The cartpath was too wide and out of proportion to the rest of the course. There were very few bunkers on this course and when there were they didn't have the best shapes that I've see. The water hazards again suffered because of the small download by not having any 'gingerbread'; they were just waterholes without any decorative plantings or other treatments around them. I'm far from being an expert on apcd work but on the #14 green there were two blue slashes at the edge, which to me would be a bad design error, something a beta tester would jump on in a split second. There was a nice clubhouse.

The elevation and caddie seemed to be working well but there weren't any great elevations to try it out with the exception of a few elevated greens. The fairways seemed to be a fair size, some even had slight undulations, for any player and the greens were generally easy with very, if any minor breaks. The fairways and greens were mostly left unguarded.

#5 hole, par 5, 545y, a legitimate width to this fairway but not a bunker in sight, and a water hazard just before the green. My drive was 284y, my next shot was for 262y to the pin, I could go for the green and have a long putt or lay up and pitch. I like to haul off every chance I get so the green it was. I landed with 22.5ft to the cup. With a reasonably flat green this is a definite birdie or better hole.

I usually write about three holes to give you an Idea of the difficulties and the strategies that have to be used on a course, but that was the only hole that even looked difficult. This course doesn't present any challenges or for that fact enjoyable play at all. Unfortunately with all the items missing from the 'not included' section of this review he obviously didn't consult any other of the designers in our 'Designer Corner' for help or advice and didn't have the course beta tested. With some additions and corrections he might have had a larger download but he would have had a better course, both esthetically and for play. Even though the course is playable I cannot recommend this course for download in spite of its tempting size and hope he will go on to design with the aid of his peers.

Reviewer Note:
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
