LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Background: Well, with a course of this file size, I am afraid we don't have many expectations other than bad ones. There is no read me included either, so we have nothing else to go on. Mr. Slosser has released four golf courses to Links Corner this month, none previously. It is too early to gauge feedback on this or the other courses.

Overall Impression: Well, as you can tell from reading the 'Included' section above, nothing is included. Of course we could have guessed that considering the file size. This is another flat course using the Whistler pano. This is a pet peeve of mine, mountain pano and flat course. If the course is supposed to be in the mountains, then how could the course be dead flat? This course uses stock textures, the default green shape and only one pin per green (dead in the middle, which is the default pin). I dare say this was the quickest course ever built and released to Links Corner. The designer obviously just did shapes and inserted them, and then planted his trees. He did absolutely nothing else at all.

Playability: This course is very playable and easy to score well on. Since it is so simple, hitting fairways and greens is not a problem. Most of the greens are relatively level as well and easy to putt. On my round here I hit 17 greens, which is an extraordinary number if you have seen me play. Of course being playable and being interesting are two different things. I do think that the designer had some interesting ideas for hole layouts and routing, but they are lost in the poor workmanship displayed here.

Shot Values: There is really not much to get excited about here, there are some dog legs here and there, but this course is generally pretty benign.

Visuals: Flat course, Whistler pano, and the same pine trees (only two) used everywhere on the course, so you tell me what you would say about visuals. Mundane is the word I would pick.

Technique: As mentioned above, the APCD technique used here is not good. There are quite a few errors which would have been more visible if the designer had tried to do a bit more with elevations and such. There are a number of sharp edges and bad texture transitions. As mentioned above, all the greens were stock shaped, there was only one pin per green (stock location) and there was only two plants used on the entire course. There was no finishing of the edges of hazards, no under planting, no second cut of fairway, no nothing!

Summary: This is not an interesting or well done golf course. I cannot recommend downloading it to anyone, even considering its miniscule size. This is a completely bare bones APCD design with nothing included. If that is what you are looking for then I say go for it.

I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
