LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by
Joe Turner `Loner'
February 2002

The tee areas, mowed fairways with dormant grass as the 'first cut', rough and greens went well with this desert course that actually looks like the desert. The sand was gritty gray, black, white, with spotty scrub and just a few saguaro cacti; many deserts don't even have those. The day was clear and the pano went on forever. The fairways were on the narrow side and the greens were a shade less than medium and a little too easy. As is typical of this kind of desert there weren't very many trees, which was to your advantage when it came to 'shaving corners'.

There were some elevation changes, elevated greens and tiered (#11) greens that have to be watched or you'll wind up with a chipping situation or a long putt that wasn't in your plans. The elevation and the caddie were very good. On the back nine water hazards appear and the bunkers start to get a little more obvious on the fairways and guarding the greens. I mentioned the narrow fairways before, they aren't a big problem unless you are playing with wind and then allowing for them shouldn't be that big a problem.

#7 hole, par 3, 217y, with a 54ft drop, just a beautiful looking hole and enjoyable on top of it. A 4 iron adjusted gave me a fantastic shot as long as I was able to hit that 6 o'clock hash mark.

# 8 hole, par 5, 611y, this long narrow 'S' shaped hole, I've been seeing a number like this as of late, has a bunker at the first landing area 286y. I was long and stayed to the right, left of the bunker, in order to get a clear second shot. I aimed for the far corner past the third green bunker with a 3w, 253y with 28y to the pin. Now a pw or lw, your choice but play quickly, the coyotes are howling and the rattlers are rattling, this wouldn't be a very good night course.

His bunkers were not overly intimidating nor the holes overly imaginative but both combined with the desert atmosphere and small download give you a very attractive download. Some of the elevated greens could give you problems but playing the greens fast would be interesting. The way I played it wouldn't be too challenging but under severe conditions it would be an excellent course. I think he has a very nice combination going for him and you, attractive desert, good playability and a ridiculously small download. Any hard drive could have this for a keeper and not miss the space. It's a great course to try, don't overlook it.

Description
Fictional, desert course

Conditions

Concept  6/10
One of the more under-stated and fluent desert courses, Coyote Run offers some surprisingly enjoyable golf, which certainly wouldn't be predicted from the first tee. Many hole routes are nominally one-way, but the open layout does allow variability, and the designer's attempts at creating a convincing atmosphere are credible if a little primitive. This is a course that may be middle-ground enough to have repeat value, too.
Appearance  4/10
Low-res stock textures and plenty of cloned planting grab the eye from the first, and don't really let up, which is a shame as there are a few well-detailed features on this course. The panorama is notably well-fitting and spectacular, and the low-level planting is more hit than miss. But the overall impression is of roughness.
Playability  6/10
Wide open holes with little threat from the desert make for some pleasant, pottering golf. There are several holes which stretch to the level of 'interesting' without threatening to become trademark holes, and certainly a variety of hole lengths. On reflection, we could probably do without the coyote sound effects.
Challenge  4/10
The lack of sophisticated bunkering doesn't hurt, and the rough regions are just too easy to escape. It's pleasing to see some moderate greens, but of course the inevitable conclusion is that it's all too easy to score six or seven under.
Technical  3/10
Bearing in mind that the designer's expertise is minimal, there's a lot to credit in making a realistic, playable and fun course such as coyote run. But it's all a little bit wearying to see yet another set of stock textures, shape placement and wibbly-wobbly extrusions. There's just not enough here to recommend it.
Overall A fair enough game of golf, but very thin on the ground when it comes to design necessities. 23/50
