LINKS CORNER REVIEW

This course has been discontinued

Reviewed by Lacy Gearheart May 2001

First Impression: This is Michael Savicki's second design uploaded to the Links Corner. This is a fantasy course that seems to traverse between a desert setting and a jungle setting. The course measures at 6967 yards from the tips and the first thing I noticed were the many dinosaurs used throughout the course. Man eaters, plant eaters, burrowers, and flying extinct animals are very plentiful here. They act is the courses main attraction and hazard. Bunkers are not too prevalent but are seen from time to time.

The setting seems to be desert for the front nine and then gradually grows into a junglesque setting later in the round. On many holes dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals scamper across the fairways and greens. They were so cool to look at I almost forgot to play golf. They did get in the way of a few shots. I hit a few "dino tails" and hit a Pterodactyl's tail once also.

Overall the course is very easy. Not much seen of hazard when it comes to bunkers and water. The course requires no shot movement. Its very easy to score on, but the manipulating the APCD was well below average. Many flaws were seen on every hole, but I actually still had fun playing it. The course definitely is unique to say the least. Most shots were uphill/downhill 20 to 40 yards. The tee boxes, greens, and many landing areas were located on plateaus which made for some club selection decisions.

Custom amenities: Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, and dinosaurs. Oh yeah.....there was a golf course too.

Greens: Stock shaped and generally very flat. These greens were usually placed on plateaus and were often challenging when it came to club selection. They were not much of a challenge when it came to putting.

Fairways: Island type fairways that were generally easy to land on. The main area to worry about was making sure not to hit any prehistoric animals while playing.

Tee Boxes: Stock shaped and flat. They did not look aesthetically great, but got the job done.

Bunkers and Water Hazards: I saw one area of ocean water but that was really no concern. A few orange bunkers were seen and they were poorly lowered and lacked depth. The main attraction here were Dinosaurs and I am sure they were the priority in the designers eyes.

Planting: The front nine had some shrubs with tropical plants like a desert course may have. The back nine seemed to be more densely planted and had more of a jungle feel to it.

Best Hole: They were all eye catchers due to the original theme, but were not much to look at when it came to golf. I chose the 390 yard, downhill, par 4 #13 hole because it had the best view from the tees.

Overall: A very uniquely theme filled course with loads of original custom objects. The golf aspect of the course was generally poorly done, but may be fun for a crazy round with friends and ALOT of beer. Most would not consider downloading the course, but the rare group of members at a dig site may find it fun.

Description
Imaginary, concept course.

Concept  7/10
Only the warped mind of Michael Savicki would conceive of a semi-desert, semi-jungle area where the dinosaurs still roamed free, and build a golf course through it. This is one of his earlier designs, and has some technical flaws, but the concept alone is sufficient to carry you through, and several holes have some good elevations and layouts that lift them into a more interesting realm.
Appearance  6/10
It doesn't require me to tell you what the overriding visual features of this course are. The dinosaurs have all been lovingly customised and look as good as 2D objects could look. The course textures themselves are pretty average, and several unconvincing sand dunes have been created, but there's plenty here to divert the attention in the form of prehistoric life.
Playability  5/10
Jurasic (yes, I know it's not the proper spelling) veers between the interesting holes and the trivial. Certainly the Par 3s and Par 5s are a cut above, and require you to exercise some thought. Sadly, a lot of Par 4s are less exciting, particularly as the desert sand usually borders the fairway. Most holes don't offer too much in the way of options so, surprisingly, it doesn't hold up well on repeated plays.
Challenge  6/10
This isn't too hard a course. Even granting a lot of bunker shots, and one or two ricochets off a stray pterodactyl, it was easy to break 70 here, due to some open and flat greens and easy escapes from all but the densest trouble. Greenside shots proved to be some of the hardest and those who are weak chippers might be advised to take a couple of mulligans out on the course with them.
Technical  5/10
There are several nasty mesh folds, particularly around the 'giant foot' bunkers (to be honest the bunkers look pretty unconvincing altogether), and some terrain work with the sand which is crying out for another texture. But the insertion of plenty of 2D dinosaurs looks surprisingly natural. Imagine what it could be with some custom textures…
Overall A blinding concept for a course, and certainly good fun for those that enjoy that sort of thing. But the novelty is short-lived, and some of the more fundamental flaws in the course design show through quickly. 29/50
