LINKS CORNER REVIEW

When you play this course it feels as if you are playing in the early morning haze, from the interestingly patterned tee areas and fairways to the deep roughs it is a very beautiful course. I can't leave out the truly magnificent pano he used. When reading all of the 'objects' in the included section you would think that the course is cluttered, just the opposite it is an orderly neat looking custom course. The bark cartpath and the reflective water in the creek that runs through the course blend in perfectly. The hazards, bunkers, water, rock fields, the creek, are very well done and placed effectively. On the # 12 hole the low flagstone wall around the tee box was unnecessary and out of place.

The elevation and caddie were satisfactory, a few times I was over-clubbed on the fairway. The fairways were leaning toward the narrow side but never reached the point of being too narrow. The greens however were on the small side, flat and easy if you were close but two and three tiered if you weren't, There were many changes of clubs and lay-ups off the tee, I felt at times that he did the same with the greens, fairways and lay-ups as he did on his first course. There were many interestingly shaped hoes with bunkers where they could do the most harm and a few of the greens treated you the same. The greens that weren't guarded seemed to take care of themselves because of their size and the tier effect.

#3 hole, par, 523y, a long dogleg left, the drive had to be with a 3w because of the 'forest' that divided the fairway. 256y. Because of my bag limitations I had to use a flop 3w for my shot to the pin, it landed 6.6 ft away and I had an eagle, without anyone around to see it.

#8 hole, par 5, 563y, for starters a nice long drive on this minor dogleg right 271y. After a second of 251y to the left of the bunker I had 30y to the pin. With a pw you are in good shape.

# 12 hole, par 5, 564y, with a 24ft drop, again I had to use a 3w off the tee because of a water hazard and a bunker, the drop gave me a little extra yardage of 265y. With 284y to the pin I wanted a 3w but at the point that it would land the fairway was very narrow so I went with a 2 iron for 230y and had a 84y lw to get close enough for a birdie.

The holes had quite a bit of imagination and challenge to them along with the beauty of this course it was a very pleasurable experience. The holes as you could tell from the three descriptions were not too difficult but did present themselves in a way that did offer you a challenge. The holes that demanded a 3w and never gave you the risk reward of using a driver were somewhat disappointing. This is a course that should be played and not let fall by the wayside with many other courses that are excellent but not outstanding. At only 20.4mb I truthfully can't see any reason for not downloading it. How he packed so much into that size download is amazing and you will have to see for yourself, and enjoy. With the size of the fairways and greens under more demanding conditions it would be an excellent on line course.

CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg)

Description
Fictional, mountain course

Concept  3/10
Glendevon is allegedly set among the Scottish Highlands, but you'd have difficulty believing it. A riot of colour and some altogether un-Links-like golf do not exactly smack true of the home of golf. While the course is reasonably diverting in itself, it doesn't feel well planned, and the riotous overkill of rocks, water and custom course objects fail to disguise that here is course that has probably lost its way somewhat in the design process.
Appearance  4/10
The course is almost cartoon-like with the vivid texture choices, and masses of planted rocks and flowers. Further up, there's a fair amount of cloning, and while the panorama is decently impressive and apt, there's just nothing holding the various elements of the course together. It's not terribly pleasant on the eye, and certainly not believable.
Playability  4/10
There's some good golfing values to be had here, if fitfully, but the lack of coherence to the course and some tight target areas take their toll eventually and the closing stretch just eventually feels like it's trying to hard. Unsympathetic pin positions and an odd approach to texture assignations mean that it's hard to come back to this one.
Challenge  4/10
It's probably a bit too easy to pick up strokes, especially on the shorter holes and some pretty easy Par 5s. Some tighter hazarding would have helped, as would time focused on making the rough areas unplayable, not just appealing.
Technical  4/10
OK, every designer has to start somewhere, and we've got Gordon to thank for bringing us the gorgeous Sarazen Links. But this would be better credited as a fantasy course, such is the imbalance in attention between superficial gloss and actual, entertaining golf. One of those courses which gets knocked down very easy and never really recovers.
Overall Bright, garish and entertaining for only a hole or two at a time. 19/50
