First Impressions:
Damaze Falls is a fictional course designed by Michael Savicki. The first thing you see is a mountain with water, grass, and rocks all over it. It looks a lot like a sculpture in a modern art museum. It's a twisted sort of thing with surfaces sticking out all over it. It dominates the landscape for most of your round. The planting here doesn't really fit in with the course. Tropical planting would have somehow worked better with the colors. There are ball washes planted everywhere. Not just one type either. The sand bunkers have been designed with a lot of different techniques. Some have just been inserted, some have been extruded, some have their edges turned, and some appear to be sand texture sitting on grass. None of these have been done very well. The terrain is sticking up everywhere and the greens are very bumpy and have large swales and other problems.
Strategy:
Severe elevation changes come into play here. You cannot hit a driver on the par 4 16th for instance because there's a big hill in front of the tee box. You need to hit a 3-wood to get enough loft on the ball. Trees sometimes obstruct your drive so fades and draws may be necessary. Numerous sand bunkers dot the course.
Favorite Hole:
12th hole par 4. I've never hit a 282 yard in the air 3-wood to reach a par 4 before.
Overall:
Too many technical errors make this course a bad choice to download.

Concept 4/10 Michael Savicki's first course is something of a rarity these days and it's got some of the prototype flair that went into later courses. The layout and APCD work take a lot to be desired, and too many holes just haven't had design though applied to them, but the ambition cannot be knocked, and one or two hole designs - even in this early incarnation - stand out a little ahead of the rest. Most notable, perhaps, is the typically oddball Par layout, with just one Par 4 hole on the outward nine. |
Appearance 0/10 A bit 'yuk', frankly. There's not been much care taken with the mesh or the application of the stock textures, and there's some absolute howlers on the way around. Far too many flaws, even by generous standards. |
Playability 1/10 It's a swift path round any Michael Savicki course, but in this instance it doesn't really gel. Too much silliness with the on-track elevations makes teeing off a lottery, and mesh errors become a problem rather than a tolerable diversion. A tough call. |
Challenge 2/10 It's difficult to judge Damaze-Falls by normal standards, such are the Savicki-style expectations. Several holes that haven't really had enough effort expended on them play rather easily; others much too hard. While you might end up with a par score, the balance is all wrong. |
Technical 0/10 I think I've said enough. |
Overall |
Fans of the Wacky World courses might want to seek out an earlier effort from the designer. I'd advise them not to bother. |
