LINKS CORNER REVIEW |

Background: This is the second version of this golf course. I am not aware of any other courses done by Mr. Cline. He says in the Read-Me that this is an Imaginary course, but I would categorize it as Fictional. It is a clean and simple golf course with no wild elevation changes or unusual objects. I never saw the first version and it is not available on Links Corner for download, so I have no further information for you about it.
Overall Impression: This is another mountain course using the Whistler pano. It is a nice simple golf course with nothing that really jumps out at you. Unfortunately there is one glaring error with this course: missing cups. On most of the greens, the cup was invisible. This is caused by not validating your golf course after changing some green elevations. It is obvious that the designer did not validate before sending in his course file. The course is actually playable this way, but totally unacceptable. It is no fun to hit a beautiful approach shot and have no hole to aim your birdie putt at. There are some other errors as well, but they could have been mostly overlooked if the cups weren't missing. Some of these errors include; bad mesh work in the bunkers, bad edges, no fringes, unmapped faces and stock shapes. There is not much clutter though, which I like in a course. Too many designers like to stuff their courses with every golf cart, ball washer and bench they can find. There is not much of this stuff on this course which is good in my book.
Playability: This course is actually very playable, other than the cup situation mentioned above. It is not too long, and has a good mixture of holes. Some of the bunkers are not finished very well, which can lead to some awkward shots from them, but all in all, this course is ok.
Shot Values: There is a good collection of shot here, with some short and some long holes of each par. I would have liked to see a little more excitement here, with some more elevation work. If you are going to use the Whistler pano, then you should be building a mountain course. This means some up and down hill shots, and lots of side hill shots. Most of the holes are pretty flat There are a number of dog legs of every variety though, as well as some straight holes.
Visuals: This is a pretty golf course if you can get over the Whistler pano again. There is good planting of pines here and there, although they are a bit redundant at times. There is lots of water and it is pretty well done. Again, there is nothing stunning about this course, but it is not bad.
Technique: As mentioned above, there are a number of errors. The most glaring ones are the bad mesh work. There are a number of sharp edges and icky looking bunkers. The designer needs to spend more time learning the APCD and how to manipulate the mesh.
Summary: This could have been a pretty nice golf course. Unfortunately, the cup situation just wrecks it. There is also some other errors which should have been fixed as well, so I cannot recommend downloading it to anybody. A designer should ALWAYS validate his course right before sending it in. This is a cardinal rule which should never be ignored.
I am both a player and a designer. I review courses primarily from the standpoint of fun and playability. I appreciate courses that are beautiful to look at, but first and foremost I want a fun experience. I have spent many hours designing courses myself, so I understand the blood, sweat and tears that go into the design process. Any critical comments made here are meant to be constructive and helpful.
