LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

February 2002

His combinations for the tees, mowed fairways, roughs and greens were a nice combination. The trees that were selected made for a pleasant setting especially with the pine needles, green brush and the off white brush that he used throughout he course. In a few places a bed of rock were seen but didn't seem to pose a hazard of any kind. The plants around and the lily pads in the water made for a relaxing look against a whitish mountain backdrop. The narrow fairways had some undulations in them that gave you that extra few yards when you hit them with your drive. The majority of the tee areas could have used a little something extra to keep them from looking so large and empty, but here is where he kept his download size small. The bunkers were not the most attractively shaped ones that I've ever seen but for a newcomer the course looked very good.

Although there weren't a great deal of severe elevation changes to warrant a perfect elevation and caddie he had both set quite well. The bunkers located on the fairways didn't seem to be a very effective deterrent but the ones at the small greens could have been. The greens were small enough that if you didn't have a dead stop and rolled onto the fringe you had an excellent chance at a birdie chip. The overall putting seemed to be very easy but as you got further into the back nine the greens had two or three tiers and were excessively sloped to the point were they were more of a chore than a challenge.

#8 hole, par5, 583y, a huge X shaped bunker blocks this fairway at a little over 300y and is hardly a problem. First with a 287y drive I found that I had 296y to the green. With a patch of rough before the green that a 3w would take me to I switched to a 2 iron and laid up at 222y with 74y lw remaining to the pin. On this slightly sloped green you should get a birdie.

# 15 hole, par 4, 334y with a 40ft drop, you will find that you are driving blind, just put your aiming stick at the end of the fairway before the rough patch and you will be safe, I was at 286y. I then had a 53y lw to the pin that was placed less than 7ft from the fringe.

#18 hole, par 5, 553y, the fairway is narrower that most of the others and slopes at the landing spot. If you don't hit as far to the left as possible next to the bunker you will roll into the right rough, 285y. I then had 249y to the flag; my 3w took me 257y onto the fringe for a chip shot. He had an attractive clubhouse.

This won't be the first time I'll say this in this paragraph, it's a playable course, not exciting by any means but playable. The holes show very little if no imagination. I played one hole and a few minutes other I was positive that I was looking at it again but with a different number. I always find it difficult criticizing a course that took several hundred hours to build when I can't build one hole let alone an entire course. This is, in spite of its size not a course that you have to play, it's a course that is small in download size and is playable. The first courses are always very difficult and you hope that the designer doesn't get too discouraged and will go on to build bigger and better ones in the future. Recommend this, no, discourage you from trying this no.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
