LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
December 2001
Since this is a duplication of a real course we must realize that the designer hasn't any latitude in changing the features to suit our tastes. The course is extremely well done especially for it's incredibly small download. The rough has a rich deep color, the mowed fairways, first cut, and the tees and greens seem to blend into one pleasant looking course. The planting is a little sparse but what he had to work with looks very good. The trees haven't any undergrowth yet they don't look 'stuck' into the ground. The tee boxes were laid out in an attractive manner. The sparseness of the course as well as the way it played made it similar to a Microsoft course.
The fascinating undulations of the fairways gave you very interesting lies for your second shots. Although the putting wasn't what I'd call easy, the absence of breaks on many holes made this course very inviting to the player that wants to try his hand at birdie golf, no not me. There were eagles to be had for the better player. The elevation seemed to work well as well as the caddie. The top views were most likely accurate but not very attractive.
5th hole, par 5, 534y, I found that the only way to take a full drive was to hit to the bottom third of the fairway by the stream, to do otherwise would put you into the stream. My drive was 392y and 244y to the flag, a 3w gave me a landing on the fringe 21.9ft from the pin and a chip gave me an eagle.
7th hole, par 5, 583y, my drive left me with 288y to the green. A 2 iron layup was called for because of the rough patch in the fairway. 225y, and now a 63y pw approach and a birdie putt.
11th hole, par 5, 543y, just go for it. The stream isn't positioned to produce any problems, I had a 289y drive and 242y to go. Because of the distance and the slight elevation I used my favorite flop 3w and was pin high, another possible eagle hole.
14th hole, par4, 363y, with the stream cutting across the fairway you would naturally look to go down the long right side of the fairway, don't.bad idea, the trees will block your second shot. The only choice here is to layup with a 3w, 262y, and an adjusted sw of 102y was the club of the hour.
This is a very well done, attractive, no frills, plain dyed in the wool golf course. It may be an exciting course on TV but it is just a very standard course for links. It is so much like a real course its amazing, he did a masterful job and kept it small enough to both download quickly and keep on your hard drive, yes a definite keeper. Enjoy it, I did, nothing inventive about it just a great course to play any time.
Reviewer Note
I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
