LINKS CORNER REVIEW |
Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'
December 2001
This imaginary course as indicated by its name takes place in 'the big city' with a multitude of skyscrapers in the background. The sounds that he added, cars, buses, air-planes, sirens, bells, birds all added to the feeling of being in a city park, which proved to be quite a novelty. His tee box, roughs, greens and mowed fairways were very well matched. Imaginary in this case meant a large assortment, wherever you looked, of the most brightly colored plants, trees, with good undergrowth, and flowers either in the ground or in giant pots that you can imagine. This was his intention and unfortunately in my opinion detracted from a nice round of golf at some unusually shaped holes.
The hazards although strategically placed were not a big problem to overcome. The elevation and the caddie seemed to be very accurate. The putting was mixed, easy most of the time and difficult on the over sloped greens. The greens that were not over sloped had some very nice and unusual undulations and tiers to them, a nice mixture. The fairways varied from normal to narrow depending on the unusual shape of the particular hole.
8th hole, par 3, 181y, with a 42ft. drop, an adjusted 6 iron landed in perfect position but unfortunately because of the slope rolled 44ft, ah, the hazard of the imagination.
11th hole, par 4, 493y, the first fairway was 204y, some rough and then the second fairway which at the top was 280, an acceptable drive. 212y to the flag, a 2 iron was perfect.
15th hole, par5, 591y, the drive went between the two fairway bunkers and had a downward roll to 305y. This left me 265y to a semi island green, a major adjustment in my 3w worked and I was on the green in 2.
Imaginary courses come in many flavors; Space and Wacky are a world apart from Bill's course. He chose the path of building an everyday golf course with ingenious twists and succeeded. This course was well designed and beautifully made; it was fully playable on holes that you would never find on a real course. Obviously his intention was to create a course that was both unusual looking and playable. Although I am not a fan of this type of course I did enjoy playing it. The download isn't that large, if you're a fan of the extra ordinary. I believe that you will enjoy this effort.

Description Imaginary, parkland course. |

Concept 8/10 Building a course in a Central Park-like environment, close to the hustle
and bustle of a large city, isn't a bad idea. The designer has
complemented with some imaginative and testing hole designs, which are
intended to lift the course above the ordinary. Sadly, it's a bit let down in
terms of the execution, but the ambition and concept are very sound
indeed. |
Appearance 5/10 Although the first hole looks lovely (don't forget to wave at the man on the right when you're teeing off), the later parts of the course are
dogged with bad shape transitions and some mesh folds in the 'difficult' areas (generally where the designer has tried to pull three
different shapes together smoothly). The deep rough texture is completely inadequate and gives you a false illusion. But the panorama
is good, and vital in setting the scene, and all the way round you can see nice touches that lift this course up from being mundane. |
Playability 6/10 This is the sort of course you want to come back to every month or so, when you are looking for something different. Taken on its own,
it's a frustrating course, leading to a lot of impossible lies and drops. The sound isn't exactly conducive to gameplay - while the
designer has done his best with custom sound, it's loud and monotonous and often poorly sampled. But the course has a strong
risk/reward factor, which will encourage you to play on if you can ignore the distractions. |
Challenge 3/10 Oh boy. Miss the fairways and you'll land in some very punishing rough. Impossible lies are commonplace, thanks to iffy landscape
design. Most worryingly of all, the greens are unrealistic and almost impossible to putt on. Something went seriously wrong when trying
to pitch the difficulty of this course and it (and your game) suffers as a result. |
Technical 2/10 A lot of work needed here too, unfortunately. While the customisation is good, the sound is terrible and some beta testing would surely
have picked up on some of the problems with the landscaping. The textures are inappropriate with hard boundaries and the planting is
repetitive. This course has genuine potential if the technical aspects can be picked up upon. |
Overall |
A good idea, but let down in the execution and with some overambitiousness.
Worth playing to see some of the inventive hole layouts, but best with the sound
turned off! |
24/50 |
