LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Chuck Clark

January 2002

Background: This is the first course released by Mr. Grimshaw. This course has received little or no notice by the links community, so we have no expectations. Mr. Grimshaw states in his read-me that 'You may or may not think that this course is good, but Hey who cares I had fun making it'. This is a great attitude to take when making a golf course with the APCD. Do it for yourself, not others! Unfortunately though, it is time for the 'others' (namely me) to decide what this course is like.

Overall Impression: This is a parkland/woodland course with some sort of custom pano (I think). As a matter of fact, the pano is a big part of this course. It jumps right off the screen at you from the first tee on. Unfortunately, it is not done right. Too much of the foreground is included, so it puts your perspective out of whack. This is especially true on the first tee. You see the course stretching out in front of you, and then the pano kicks in. The bottom part of the pano looks much closer than the farther parts of the course you see. This is too bad, because this could be a great pano. It just needs to be trimmed up a little to remove the foreground.

Once you forget about the pano and concentrate on the course, if is a bit unusual. There are deep forest areas of tall pines. But in between these areas is no planting at all. Many of the holes have nothing along the sides of the fairways but rough. He used deep rough though, so it is no bargain if you stray off the fairways. Another reoccurring theme here is the size of the greens. They are huge! You can have some real long putts here. The course is pretty flat too, despite the mountainous looking pano. There are quite a few lakes, but they don't come into play very much. There are very few bunkers as well. Many of the greens are not protected by any hazard at all, except that deep rough. So what results is a very clean and simple golf course. There isn't anything tricked up or complicated about this course.

Good Points: I did like the planting in the forest areas. This was well done, but I sure wish he used more of this. I kind of liked the big greens as a change of pace. I am so used to playing small and difficult greens, it was nice to have those big babies to aim at. Something else that I thought was interesting was that the first and last holes were par 3's. I don't know too many courses in real life like that.

Not So Good: Unfortunately, there were quite a few things I didn't like about this course. In addition to the pano issues mentioned above, I didn't care for the length. This course was 7657 yards long from the back tees. This is too much for me. I also did not like the volcano (?), or whatever the heck it was (see the picture above), visible from a number of holes. It was very phony looking and did not fit in well at all with the pano. There was also a bizarre water fountain in the middle of a lake on the 10th hole (see picture above). Not only was this fountain completely out of place, but it was floating above the lake by at least 10 feet. You could almost see under it to the other bank of the lake. There were some other small issues that should have been fixed here. There were some sharp edges, bad texture transitions and unmapped bunker lips. I also thought that the layout was fairly uninspired. It was a bit boring to be honest.

Summary: To summarize, this is a different looking golf course. The pano is disconcerting to say the least. There are some weird and unusual things along the way. There are just too many errors though for me to really recommend this course. The designer needs to work on making his course more realistic looking with a better fitting pano. He also needs to work on his APCD techniques. I would also like to see a little more interesting golf course as well. If you like big greens and don't mind the other stuff, then you may want to download it. It certainly is not a big file, so it may be worth your while.
