LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

January 2002

This course being a reproduction of a 'real' course the designer has little if any latitude in changing the design. Although there were a few separate tee boxes the single 3 tee box seemed to be most prevalent at this course. The mowed fairways and checkerboard greens were most attractive but the unusual texture to the rough made for a very nice mixture of the four. He occasionally used some undergrowth in the tree line effectively, but for the most part the deep rough seemed to keep the trees from have that 'stuck in' or 'floating' look. The trees very seldom served as hazards along the fairways. There are very few bunkers on this course and no water hazards, elevation seemed to be the hazard on this short course which because of the elevation changes played fairly normal.

The elevations were very interesting and entertaining for a change, the caddie had to be and was excellent. The fairways were on the generous side with the exception of the two 5 pars, they were very narrow and that seemed to serve in the place of a hazard. The fairways on a few holes were very sloped and it seemed to me a few were 'crowned'. It would behoove you to be aware of the 'mud holes' on #14 fairway since they are near the landing spot of your drive. The greens were very fair and had nice and gentle breaks that can fool you, most enjoyable putting. Since golf is a pleasurable game, take some time to look back down the fairways; he has some nice long views.

#4 hole, par 3, 171y, with a 29ft drop, an 8 iron with a slight adjustment seemed to be the perfect club for my 'easy' pin placement.

# 5 hole, par 4, 288y, with a 48ft elevation, your playing blind here. I found that the only way that I could play this hole and avoid the trees was to place my aiming stick in the center of the left bunker and play a fade driver. This put me between the two bunkers 257y, and only 26y from the green. You of course can play a shorter drive with a flop 3w, this put me 44y sort of the pin. Easier. yes. as much fun. your call.

On a number of the holes the trees close to the tees seemed to be a hazard, the designer or the 'real' course. It was an enjoyable course to play even though when you look at the yardage and the par you might be turned off, don't be. This is a bit different as courses go because of the elevations, and I believe that you will enjoy a few rounds here. The first to get to know the course, and the others to see how badly you can beat it. The putting will give you a great advantage for a lower score so you might want to change to more difficult conditions for a bit more challenge. I would suggest downloading this one for not only the attractiveness of it but for the playability. If you're looking for that 'hard' to win course forget it, but for the average golfer it will give you a change and pleasure.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
