LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

November 2001

A tall white mountain, tan sand, dark rich playing surface (mowed fairways), a beautiful assortment of trees and water hazards, rock trimmed, surrounded with tall grass sets this course apart from many others designed today. The sound of rushing water, frogs, ducks and crazed birds added to the pleasurable play of a round here. Sounds and colors do not make a course. The 18th hole was a fine looking hole befitting a pleasurable looking course such as this, it had a tent with people, a clubhouse with the Canadian flag flying proudly, yes a fine looking hole indeed.

The elevation and the caddie were excellent, and the putting was fairly easy with subtle breaks that kept you honest. The greens were on the small side although I have seen smaller (Broken Arrow). The fairways were a little less than medium and long, with nicely placed avoidable bunkers and creeks crossing them at varying points.

8th hole par 4, 417y, on this 'S' shaped dogleg to the right I found my best bet was to aim just to the right of the creek crossing the fairway, any higher and the tall trees proved to be a problem. 276y with 109y to go. This green was extremely small and heavily guarded on the right by a large bunker and on the left by a water hazard with a dangerous sounding frog. Beware, this green is elevated and a full pitching wedge gave me a perfect shot.

9th hole par 5, 559y. aiming just short of the bottom of the first bunker gave me a 284y drive and left me with a 229y approach shot to this green almost entirely surrounded by water. A 2 iron with a lower adjustment both cleared the trees and put me on the far fringe just 11ft past the hole. Birdie is a given!

14th hole par 4, 411y, this hole was divided by wildgrass. If you used a driver you would land in the first cut so I went with a 3w layup. By the way after a few tries I did land on the bridge, coolJ. Back to the game. With 247y from the 3w I had 144y to the flag, very acceptable, especially with the large water hazard behind this usually small green. A 6 iron was necessary because of the elevated green.

I see nothing exceptional about this very, very playable, beautiful course that was a 'real' challenge. The smallish greens and the less than normal sized fairways with their preponderance of hazards, bunkers, water, wildgrass and creeks lead me to believe that this would be an excellent tournament course and of course at the Zone. Playing under adverse conditions would completely change the entire feeling of a round here. Even at a 42mb I would wholeheartedly recommend the download of this effort.

Reviewer Note

I am a player not a designer and therefore rate a course as a player for other players.
