LINKS CORNER REVIEW

Reviewed by Joe Turner `Loner'

November 2001

The choice of rich green colors for the tee boxes, mowed fairways, roughs and greens were excellent. The beautiful assortment of pine trees, the white mountain in the background, the 'white waste area' with short bush dotting it all combined to give you the feeling of a brisk fall day. Combine it with large areas of pine needles, stone retaining wall and stone water hazard treatment, brown sand in the bunkers made this a truly a magnificent looking course. I even saw a few deer on the 8th hole; they would only be a hazard if you wore white shoes.

His beautiful looking course was only matched by his boundless imagination in creating some of the most interesting holes that I've seen in a long time. Every hole deserved some interpretation but I will leave it up to you to do that. The putting was the only slight drawback in this course; it was at time much too easy. With large greens if you were skillful enough to get within 15ft of the hole with your approach shot you were most assuredly going to get a birdie, farther than that and the greens seemed moderately difficult, an interesting combination. Both the elevation and the caddie were very good.

4th hole, par 5, 531y, this sight dog leg to the left was broken up by patches of rough, water and bunkers, I took my drive to the far right corner of the second bunker, it was 284y with 275y to go. With an adjustment in setup I chose to go with low trajectory for the extra added distance, I took my approach shot to the green and landed 21y from the cup, not a terrific idea, I might have been better off going to the right fairway and pitching to the flag, fortunately I had a fairly straight putt but pitching to the upper level of the green would have been a better choice.

7th hole, par 4, 310y, the green is completely guarded by a huge bunker and either a low trajectory drive or even an overswing would not let you reach the green in one. The only choice was to layup with a 3w leaving me with a 50y approach shot. This slightly sloped green could prove to be difficult if you don't get close to the cup.

18th hole, par 5, 545y, with the slight sound of bagpipes playing in the background this was a fantastic looking finishing hole. I went straight up the center of the fairway to avoid all the pothole bunkers and had 228y to go. I opted for a 3w flop, which put me 30.1ft past the flag on the fringe, chip. putt.birdie.

What this course gave me was beauty and interest, the first hole was a great start and the last hole a fitting finish to a course that gives you 16 holes in between those two of pure interest and challenge, yes the greens were on the easy side if you let them, but the fairways made you change clubs for distance variation, elevation, and decision making for those pesky large greens. This is definitely one of the fine courses that we have, but now Steve what are you going to do for an encore? You realize that your next course has to have more than this to win the 'COM' and judging from this one I expect that it will. I for one will be waiting. Do I have to tell you to download it, if so then download it. You will enjoy this one.
